Description

E. F. VILKOMERSON. FOUNTAIN PEN HOLDER.
APPLICATION mum JAN. 9, 1915.

FFTQ.
ELIZABETH F. VILKOMERSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOUNTAIN-PEN HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. so, 1915.
Application filed January 9, 1915. Serial No. 1,352.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH F. V11.- KOMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pen Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to article carrying devices, and has for its object the provision of means attached to a waist or other upper garment and engageable by means attached to a fountain pen whereby the pen may be carried in a vertical position with its point up, the invention being especially designed for the use of professional women such as stenographers, nurses and the like, whose garments are unprovided with a suitable pocket in which a fountain pen may be carried in the proper position convenient for use.
An important object is the provision of a hook member carried by the garment so constructed that the pen carrying member will, when engaged upon it, be held in a rigid position and prevented from lateral swinging or tilting.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, such as simplicity and cheapness in manufacture, efficiency and durability in service, and the general improvement of the art, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pen supported by my device, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the garment engaging member, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pen engaging member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the garment engaging member which is formed from a single piece of material, preferably metal, and provided on the rear side of its upper or bar portion 2 with a pin 3 pivoted as at 4 and having its end engageable within a catch 5. The member 1 is cut to provide a vertically upwardly extending tongue 6 which has its end bent slightly forward as shown at 7 and is formed as a hook, its central portion. 8 being cut away. A laterally projecting shoulder 9 is formed 011 the outer edge 10 of the bight 11 of the hook at its junction with the outer edge of the tongue 6, the shoulder alining with the junction of the inner edge 12 of the bight with the inner edge of the tongue. This member 1 issecured to the garment, such as a waist or the like, by means of the pin 3 and will lie substantially flat against the garment with the upper end of the tongue offset forwardly.
The pen engaging member is designated as a whole'by the numeral 13 and comprises a single piece of material, preferably spring metal, formed as a split band 14. Formed integrally upon and extending upwardly from the top edge of the band 14 is an ear 15 which has its end portion bent outwardly as shown at 16 and provided with a slot 17 0f the same length as the width of the tongue 6. The band 14 is applied to a pen by slipping it over the body portion 18 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the band accommodating itself to pens of different diameters.
The pen is supported by engaging the slot 17 upon the tongue 6. The tongue will pass through the slot until the bent portion 16 of the ear 15 rests upon the shoulder 9 which will prevent the car from slipping around on the bight 11 of the hook. As the tongue 6 is rectangular in cross-section and the slot 17 rectangular the member 13 is held firmly or in a rigid position, and consequently the pen can not turn. It will therefore be apparent that the pen can not move in any direction except upwardly. As the tongue 6 and the ear 15 are offset at their ends, the member 13 is readily engaged upon the tongue, thus rendering the device simple and easy to use.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. The combination with a pen encircling band having an ear thereon provided with a transverse rectangular slot, of a member adapted for attachment to a garment and comprising a body portion, an upwardly extending tongue thereon rectangular in cross- Copies of this patent may be obtained for comprlsing a body portion,
laterally extending shoulder at the junction of the outer edge of said tongue with said body portion, said shoulder being engaged by said ear. 7 V
In testimony whereof 1 hereto affiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
' ELIZABETH r. VILKOMERSON.
