SAMUEL ELBION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFE FOB TOILET ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 15, 1914. Serial N 0. 839,176.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ELBION, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safes for Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safes for toilet articles and the like, the object being to provide a device by which any individual may lock up all the toilet articles to be used by him and prevent the unauthorized use by others.
It consists in a casing having a chamber in which may be stored the smaller toilet articles to be used, such as tooth brushes and powder, nail brushes, etc., said chamber being closed by a door adapted to be locked, while the exterior of said casing is provided with members for locking the hair brush and comb, these members being locked by means located within the casing and preferablv secured to the door thereof.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter ven.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a device embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section, the cutting plane being on line'2--2'on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section, the cutting plane being on line 3-3 on Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section, the cutting plane being on line 44 on Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents an elevation of a portion of the inner face of the door and a portion of the casing, and showing the means for operating the locking devices for the toilet articles supported on the outside of the door, and Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the comb support.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 represents a casing having hinged thereto at,11 the door 12 adapted to be locked to the casing by the lock 13. A keyhole 14 is provided in the door 12 for the insertion of the key to the lock 13. The casing 10 is provided with suitable ears 15 by which it may be secured to a wall or other member. The door 12 is providedwith a towel rack 16 and has an opening 17 therein, behind which is secured a mirror.l8 by means of clips or similar members 19. The interior of the eas- Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
ing is provided with a horizontal shelfv 20 upon which may be stored small toilet articles, such as tooth brushes, nail brushes,
tooth powder, and the like. A vertical partition 21 divides the space below the shelf 20 into two compartments, in one of which small toilet articles may be placed, while in the other the shaving brush 22 and soap dish pivoted to another fiat member 29 which is.
pivotally connected by a screw 30 to a bracket 31.
The screw 30 extends through a slot 32 in the member 29 so that when the brush 22 and cup 23 are not in use the shaving outfit may be folded into the left hand compartment as indicated in Fig. 1 in dotted lines, the member 29 being moved to the rear to permit the various members to be contained within this compartment. The slot 32 permits this rearward movement. shaving outfit is to be used it is moved into the position shown in Fig. 2 at which time the member 29 rests in a slot 33 in the edge of an inwardly extending flange 34: formed upon the left hand wall of the casing 10.
Secured to the front of the door 12 is a bracket 35 having a vertical plate 36 at its front end, this plate having hinged thereto When the I at 37 the U-shaped member 38 adaptedto receive the handle of a brush as indicated in Fig. 1. Normally the U- shaped member is free to move about the hinge 37 to permit the positioning of the brush therein or its displacement therefrom. A forked member 39 is provided with forked ends adapted to straddle said U-shaped member to prevent movement thereof about said hinge 37, thereby locking the brush 40 and preventing its unauthorized use- This forked member 39 has a shank 41 extending through the door 12 and provided with a head 42 between which and the inner face of said door is interposed a spring 43 adapted normally to retain said forked member 39 in inoperative position. The member 35 is provided with an ear 44 extending over said forked member 89 to prevent the latter from turning, and retaining the ends thereof in the same horizontal plane under all conditions. To the front face of the door there is also secured a comb support 45 formed of bent wire as shown in Fig. 6, the lower bends 46 thereof being adapted to support the end of a comb 47 as indicated in Fig. 1, while the bends 48 are adapted to register the back of said comb.
The main supporting member 49 of the comb support is provided with a forwardly extending rod 50 on which is adapted to move a plate 51 having a plurality of fiat forward extensions 52, one of which is adapted to register with the back of the comb 47 while the others are adapted to enter between two teeth of said comb and prevent its displacement from the support 45 and its unauthorized use.
Extending rearwardly from the plate 51 and through the door 12 is a rod 53, the rear end of which is provided with a head 54 between which and the inner face of the door 12 is interposed a spring 55 adapted undernormal conditions to retain the locking plate 51 and its extensions 52 in inoperative position, thereby permitting the positioning of the comb 47 on its support 45 or its displacement therefrom. Beneath the heads 4254 is mounted a member 56, the ends of which are pivotally mounted in ears 57 secured to the inner face of the door 12. This member 56 is provided with arms 58 adapted to engage the heads 4254 and force the locking devices 39-51 into operative position when ever the said member is moved into the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The member 56 has pivotally secured thereto at 59 an arm 60 adapted to engage and coact with a clip 61 secured to the inner face of the door 12 whenever the member 56 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, this coaction of the arm 60 with clip 61 locking the devices 39 51 in operative position.
Such a device isparticularly adapted for public toilets in office buildings where each occupant of the building may have his individual toilet articles locked up in such a manner as to prevent their unauthorized use by others. It is believed that the many advantages of this device will be fully apparent from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a safe for toilet articles, the combination of a casing; a comb support secured to a wall thereof, and a movable forked member adapted tostraddle the back of said comb with a prong thereof interposed between the teeth thereof.
2. In a safe for toilet articles, the combination of a casing; a comb support secured to a wall thereof, a movable forked member adapted to straddle the back of said comb with a prong thereof interposed between the teeth thereof, and means for locking said forked member in adjusted position.
3. In a safe for toilet articles, the combination of a casing; a support for a toilet article secured thereto; a movable locking device coperating therewith to prevent the removal of said toilet article from said support; a spring for normally retaining said locking device in inoperative position; a hinged member within said casing for moving said locking device into operative position, said member being provided with a lateral arm; and means coacting therewith for locking said member in adjusted position.
4. In a safe for toilet articles, the combination of a casing; a support for a toilet article secured thereto; a movable spring pressed locking device cooperating therewith to prevent the removal of said toilet article from said support and extending through said casing; a member hinged to the inner face of said casing and adapted to be moved against the inner end of said mow able member to force said member into operative position; and means for locking said hinged member in operative position.
5. In a safe for toilet articles, the combination of a casing; a support for a toilet article secured thereto; a movable spring pressed locking device coiiperating therewith to prevent the removal of said toilet article from said support and extending through said casing; a member hinged to the inner face of said casing and adapted to be moved against the inner end of said movable member to force said member into operative position; a clip secured to the inner face of said casing; and an arm pivoted to said hinged member and adapted to coact with said clip to lock said hinged member in adjusted position.
Signed by me at 4 Post Oflice Sq., Boston, Mass, this 6th day of May, 1914.
SAMUEL ELBION.
