PIPE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 12, 1914. Serial No. 811,644.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen G. PYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in pipe hangers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of pipe hangers, and to provide a simple, strong and durable pipe hanger of inexpensive construction, adapted to be manufactured from scrap metal, and capable of being easily and quickly applied in position and adjusted to lit the pipe to be hung and adapted also to be hung sulilciently low to permit the necessary expansion and contraction of steam or other pipes without affecting the fastening means of the hanger.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure l is a front elevation of a pipe hanger, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cen tral vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a detail sectional perspective view of one side of the seat portion of the hanger.

In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the pipe hanger 1, which is approximately U-shaped, is constructed of a single narrow strip of sheet metal and consists of flat vertical sides 2 and a lower curved seat portion 3, connecting the lower ends of the sides 2 and conforming to the configuration of and partially surrounding a pipe 4. Scrap metal may be utilized in the manufacture of the pipe hangers, and the fiat sides 2, which are arranged in the same transverse plane, are adapted to fit against the side of a joist or other support, and they are provided at intervals with perforations for the reception of nails, screws, or other suitable fastening devices for securing the hanger to the joist or other supporting member.
The curved seat portion 3 is formed by folding the intermediate portion of the strip of sheet metal longitudinally on itself to form two plies or thicknesses 6 and to present the side face of the inner plv or thicln ness to the pipe 4 and arrange the seat po1= tion flat against the same. l'he longitudinal folding of the strip arranges the side faces of the folded intermediate portion of the hanger in planes at right angles to the planes of the faces of the sides 2, the metal being folded Jrior to curving the same to fit the pipe. The folded intermediate seat portion is adapted to be readily curved to fit the pipe at, and it is adjustable to enable the hanger to fit pipes of different diameters, but hangers may, of course, be made of diiferent sizes with the attaching side portions and the curved intermediate seatportion of different lengths. The metal at the ends 7 of the seat portion diverges upwardly and merges into the straight vertical sides.
What is claimed is A pipe hanger consisting of a strip of sheet metal folded longitudinally along its intermediate portion to form two plies or thicknesses with their side faces in planes at right angles to the planes of the side faces of the end portions of the strip, the terminals of the plies or thicknesses diverging outwardly and merging into the said end portions, the latter being flat and consisting of single plies or thicknesses and the intermediate seat portion being curved to conform to the configuration of a pipe.
