Description

HALF HIS RIGHTTO'GEORGESCRULL, 0F SAME PLAOE.
Letters Patent No. 113,026, dated March 28,'1 871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-CLIPS.
The Schedule referred to ln these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
I. JACOB M. Cantin, of the city of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Receptacle for Newspapers, Cards, &c., of' which the following is a specification. l v
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing my device of sheet metal or wire that it may be easily attached to orremoved from a door, wall, lor other object; and that, when applied to a door, it can be rem'oved only when the door is open; and that it will readily receive and securely hold newspapers, cards, &c.
In the accompanying drawing- E is an outer door of a house.
K N Z W- is the receptacle, mounted on the door, with anewspaper inserted in the lip or stirrup.
The shank or stern` has a claw, K, bent at right angles to the plane of the shank, which is so made toconform to the edge of the door next the hinges to prevent the' device from swinging about its point of'. support, A, and to prevent tampering with it by nnauthorized persons, as it cannot be-removed from the door unless the door is open.
This last result is eected by a key-hole slot, B, in
the shank, into which a stud or screw, A, is inserted,
which is the only part thatis designed to be stationary.
It will be seen that the device can be easily removed when the door is open, the edge of the door being then so turned. 'as to permit the claw K to pass ont far enough to freeahe stud-head A of the narrow end of slot B.
The front end of the device, N W, is a long loop,
bent out fromthe plane of the shank at N', and having its further end returned under at W, to the plane of the shank.- The loop is thus made to return for three considerations- First, it increases the spring capacity, as the tension at anything under W is eliected by aleverage not exceeding t-he distance from N' to N, which is further relieved by the return of the -loop end. y
Second, a paper, or other suitable object, can be vmore readily inserted under W, as the knees or doubled parts R stand up so as to allow the paper to be slid into place under W.
vThird, other objects, not thin or dat, can be inserted and heldbetween thepartsN and W, which constitute a spring-hook or keeper.
This device is mainly designed t'o prevent the loss of newspapers, which, when'delivered by newsboys in cities, are generally stuck or crowded between doorknobs and the door-jamb, and are liable to be carried away by the wind. It will also, to some extent, prevent the too frequent ringing of door-bells by the Irunners with advertising bills, cards, &c.
It can, however, also be used to hold display articles on walls, &c.
The returned spring-loop NV, in combination with shank A N', provided with claw K, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
