PATENT OFFICE;
CARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 740,228,:lated September 29 1903.
Application filed February 27, 1903. Serial No. 145,320. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BEALS OAR- PENTER, a citizen of the United States, and a new and Improved Card, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in cards, and has particular application to visiting-cards, displaycards, or the like.
One of the important objects of my invention is to provide a card which may be readily attached to any projection, such as a doorknob or the like, the shape of the article being such that the likelihood of the card being disturbed or lost will be obviated.
A further object of the invention is to provide my improved card with a'tongue or extension cut from the material of the blank, such tongue serving as a support or brace for the card when it is desired to apply the same in an upright position.
As is well known it is often desirable to leave a memorandum-card at the place of business or at the residence of an absent party, and it is the general practice to either place such cards on the shank of a door-knob or slide the same beneath the door, the result being that the card is either knocked from the door and lost or else is passed unnoticed; but an invention such as I have devised will enable a card to be supported in an upright position where it will attract attention.
To the accomplishment of the above-recited ends and those of a similar nature, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as are described in this specification, illustrated in the accom panying drawings, and set forth in the annexed claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,-
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a view of a portion of a door,
showing the manner of applying myimproved card thereto.
. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken'through a portion of a door having my card applied thereto and showing the tongue of the card acting as a brace or support. Fig. 3 is a face view of one of my improved cards. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same, showing the tongue bent backward and acting as a support; and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4:.
Referring now to the accompanyingdrawings, the letter A designates a portion of a door to the shank B of the knob O whereof is applied my improved card. As will be seen, particularly upon reference to Figs. 3 4, and 5, this card comprises an ordinary plain blank 1, which may be of cardboard or the like, and approximately centrally-0f one edge of the card, as at 2, I make a cut or incision 3, preferably semicircular or circular in shape, but do not sever the tongue portion 4 thus formed entirely from the body ofthe card. The tongue 4. is formed integral with the card-blank, and when it is desired to use the same as a support to enable such card or blank to be retained in an upright position the tongue may be bent backward approximately along the line a: xfshown in Figs. 3 ,and 4) until said tongue assumes the position plainly illustrated'in Figs. 4: and 5. If it is desired to place the card upon the shank of a door-knob or in a like position, instead of bending the tongue back the latter may be bent forward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby enabling the card to be held with the printed-matter, such as the name or address, plainly in view.
There are .many advantages incident to my improvement which will immediatelysuggest themselves. Foninstance, when the card has an advertisement or price-mark printed thereon the tongue and incision may be so formed that the card may be easily and securely attached to articles, such as shoes or hats, displayed in a store-window. When the card is employed for social or visiting purposes, the tongue is so formed that the card will be supported in an upright position on atable or desk or the like. The numerous other advantages incident to my invention are so apparent that it is unnecessary to dwell upon the same here in detail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A card having a relatively small curved cision, said tongue forming a support for IO incision at the lower edge portion thereof, said card, substantially as set forth the point of meeting of the side walls of the In testimony whereof I have signed my incision and the'lower edge of the card formname to this specification in the presence of 5 ing sharp, oppositely-turned points in the two subscribing witnesses.
'card designed when the latter is attached to EDWARD BEALS CARPENTER.
a cylindrical object, to partially encircle and Witnesses: securely engage the same, and a tongue EDITH REDD CARPENTER,
, formed integral with the card by said in- ISABEL Q. REDD.
