Be it known that I,"'I`rroMAs F. CoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decorah, in the county of lllinneshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Display Devices, of which the following is a description.

My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as display or advertising devices and relates particularly to a holder l for containing cards, and especially business cards. The holder may be used in public places to contain business cards, advertising the distributer of the card, or it may be used for office or private use to retain addresses of different persons and business firms or other desired information. The invention has among its objects the production of a. holder of the vkind described that is simple, convenient, durable, attractive, eflicient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable, which holder is ine z-A pensive to manufacture.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described andmore particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which the preferred forms of my` device are shown, 1 represents a suitable board or back constructed of any preferred material, sheet metal being especially desirable. The board l is arranged to carry one or more cards, as for example similar to the card T illustrated. The board is divided into spaces,

either the same or of different sizes, there being ordinarily room for one card on each space, so that each card may be completely displayed. To support the cards I provide supporting members or hooks 2. In the construction shown these are formed integrally with the body `part l of the board by partially punching out a portion of the material, and may be turned slightly in, as indicated in Fig. S, if desired, so that when a card is inserted as shown in Fig. Q., the corner 2 of the projection 2, which is somewhat resilient, will tend in itself to maintain thecard in place and flat against the board.

However, I prefer to use an additional retaining or fastening member arranged to engage the top edge or other edge of the card and prevent the accidental displacement thereof. For this purpose I have slotted the board as shown at 3 and arranged a fastening member consisting of an engaging part +L arranged to engage the upper edge of the card,` part 5 extending through the slot 3, with the part 6 formed thereon. As shown, it is turned down. The same is of greater width than the part 5 and slot 3, so that the fastener will be maintained on the board and not be drawn through the slot. In this connection I have also slightly bent the ends 6 toward the part 4, so that when the fasteneris in use the part G being somewhat resilient, tends to hold part s and the card tight against the board, regardless of the size of the card. This tends toprevent the wind or a draft from getting back of the card and possibly disarrangingsame. On the board shown in Fig. 'l I have designated the spaces by the letters A, B, etc., as indicated by the reference character 8, this serving to identify the several spaces. In Fig. fl I have shown a small frame 9 slotted at one edge and arranged to receive a card 11. This makes the card a little more attractive, and if the frame is made of sheet metal the same may be made so that it is but slightly thicker than the thickness of the card. Wlhere the frame 9 is used the card is positioned in the frame and the frame then inserted in the holders similar to the card 7 shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 5 'the construction illustrated is similar except that I have shown additional card engaging members 1l similar to the supporting members 2 shown in Fig. l. I'Vhere these are employed the securing members s are not necessary, but I have shown Mil@ them as in some cases it might be preferred to have them. In this construction I have identified the spaces by numerals as indicated at l5, so that the board when so arranged might be used to indicate days of the month, should that be desired for any reason. As an illustration, a business man might expect the call of a salesman on the second, or might desire to communicate with some particular party on the second; he would place the card of that party card on space 2; and so with the other spaces. Or, in case it is desired to rent a space for advertising purposes, the advertiser could enter into a contract for a particular space, as for example, space 2, and know exactly what space was meant. In the construction shown in Fig. 6 the board 16 is formed with the sccuring or supporting hooks 19 arranged to carry the card 18. In this construction I have placed the fastening members 20, which extend through the slots 21 and are similar to the fastening members previously described, at each end of the card. If desired the two members may be secured together by a resilient member so as to firmly maintain them in place. For this purpose I have shown an exceedingly simple and inexpensive construction, the same being a rubber band 23 arranged about the parts at the back of the board and prevented from slipping off by the extension 22 similar to the part 6 shown on the member in Fig. 3.

The device is particularly desirable for use in hotels, cigar stores, and other similar public places, or even in private places, for displaying the advertising of various people. By arranging it so that their business cards may be held their particular or individual advertisement is shown, the same being particularly effective where the.v advertiser has a neat, attractive and striking business card. Its use, however, is not confined to that particular type of card, as postal cards and the like may be held thereby. It is also convenient and desirable for private use to keep cards as reminders or for future reference, or to call attention to particular days or matters to come up.

Having thus described my invention it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, arrangement, construction or combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A device of the kind described, comprising a board of suitable material having card supporting means thereon arranged to engage the lower edges of the cards, and adjustable means for maintaining said cards on said supports, comprising an adjustable member for each card projecting through the board and engaging at the edge of the card, said member formed with a resilient part arranged to engage with the back face of the board and maintain the card positioned between the member and board.

2. In a display device of the kind described and in combination therewith, a display board provided with card supporting hooks formed integral therewith and slotted adjacent the hooks, and means arranged to engage a card carried `by said hooks, and maintain the same on the hooks, comprising an adjustable member extended through the slot and provided with integrally formed resilient'means at the back of the board for maintainingthe adjustable member in operative position.
