IRON-CASED-IBASKET STREET-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed February 24, 1913. Serial No. 750,390.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. Hones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Iron-Cased-Basket Street- Marker, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a receptacle adapted to be placed at street corners or elsewhere, for the purpose of receiving waste paper.
The invention aims to provide novel means whereby the receptacle may be ventilated, and to provide novel means whereby the paper which is in the receptacle will be prevented from blowing out of the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a receptacle which may be emptied readily, and which may be kept in a sanitarv condition.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a case, the case preferably being fashioned from metal and being in the present instance, although not necessarily of rectangular contour. The case 1 comprises a bottom 2. There is an opening in the lower end of the case, the opening being shown as a central ventilating opening 3 in the bottom 2, there being other openings i in the bottom 2, adapted to receive securing elements whereby the case 1 may be secured to suitable legs L or be secured to sub-structure of any desired sort.
Connected by means of hinges 5 with the case 1 is a cover 6 which is of frusto-pyramidal outline, the cover 6 comprising flaring side walls 7. In the top of the cover 6 there is an opening 8, the side walls 7 being equipped, about the periphery of the opening 8, with depending tongues 9 located at an acute angle to the inner faces of the fiaring side walls 7 of the cover 6.
Upon the side walls 7 of the cover 6, the names of streets may be marked as shown at 10, the points of the compass being also shown upon the side walls 7 as indicated at 1 Located within the case 1 and conforming closely thereto is a basket 12 which preferably is fashioned out of wire netting or other foraminous material. The basket 12 is equipped with handles 14. The handles 14, constituting a portion of the basket, upstand above the case for manual manipulation.
In practical operation, the waste paper is thrust intothe opening 8 in the cover 6 and is received within the basket 12.
Owing to the fact that the bottom 2 of the case 1 is provided with the opening 3, the contents of the basket 12 will be thoroughly ventilated, this ventilation of course, being promoted by the fact that the basket 12 is of foraminous construction. In order that the waste paper within the basket 12 may not be blown out of the opening 8, due to the air entering the ventilating opening 3, or entering the case in any other manner, the tongues 9 are provided, it being obvious that any waste paper which is carried upwardly toward the opening 8 will be engaged by the tongues 9 and be held in place within the case. Owing to the pointed form of the tongues 9, the same Will be of peculiar utility to the endabove pointed out.
Having thus described the invention What the basket and communicating With the air exterior tothe case, the top having an un- Copies of this patent may be obtained for encumbered opening, the openings cooperat ing to produce a continuous draft through the basket; and a circumferentially discontinuous support upholding the case.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have. hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT o. HOBBS.
