To all whom it may concern..-
'Be it known that I, RALPH J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Marcos, in the county of. Hays and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating-Covers, of which the following is a description.
Figure l is aside elevation of my improved ventilating-cover. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same from above with the top of the ventilator-casing removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation on the line y y in Fig. 2.
My invention relates to the covers or lids used in connection with jars, pots, vases, stone bottles, vessels, or jugs, to preserve the contents of the same from injury; and it consists in the detailed construction of the same, as hereinafter described, whereby the contents of said vessels are protected from dust, insects, and all kinds of impurity, and at the same time are thoroughly ventilated by free communication with the atmosphere, and so that any gases arising from the contents of said vessels will not be confined with the contents, but will pass off through the ventilatingcover into the surrounding air.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference, where used in the different figures, indicate corresponding parts.
A is the cover or lid, which may be made of any shape to fit the vessel in connection with which it is to be used.
B is a ventilator consisting of a central passage covered at the top with a sheet of wiregauze, G, and open at the bottom.
D is the ventilator-casing attached to the cover A, surrounding the ventilator,and provided with holes 02 in the side of it below the top of the ventilator B, thus forming a communication between the space surrounding the ventilator and the atmosphere. The ventilator-casing B is made to project somewhat above the top of the ventilator, so that a space is left between the top E of said ventilatorcasing, which consists of asolid plate, and the gauze O of the ventilator. The top E of the ventilator-casing is provided with an ornamental handle, 6, by which it may be lifted,
and is preferably made with flanged edges for attaching to the sides.
F is a flange open in the center and fastened to the ventilator B above the wiregauze 0, so that the edges of said flange project over the top of the ventilator B and reduce the space between it and the ventilator casing D to a narrow ring at a point immediately above the holes d. This flange F and the wire-gauze C may be connected to the ventilator B, so as to take off and on, or they may be fastened securely, as may be found convenient in adapting the cover to different vessels and their contents.
My ventilating-cover may be variously modified in proportion and detail to suit the different purposes to which it may be applied, and may be made of various materials or combinations of material, as found convenient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a ventilating-cover consisting of the cover A, the ventilating-tube B, projecting upward from the same, gauze O on the upper end of tube B, and the casing D E, surrounding the tube B, secured at its lower edge to the cover A, and provided with apertures d, the top of said casing being above the top of the tube B, substantially as shown and described.
