I S. E. BOWEBSOOK BREAD, CAKE, 0E CHEESE BOX. No. 381,824. I Patented Apr. 24, 1888.
INVENTOR Z WITNESSESI 8 V f fl /lfllffimww UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SALLIE E. BOWERSOOK, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BREAD, CAKE, OR CHEESE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,824, dated April 24-, 1888.
Application filed September 16, 1887. Serial No. 249,838.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALLIE E. BowERsooK, of the city of Baltimore, a citizen of the United States, residing at 325 East Townsend street, in the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Bread, Cake, or Cheese Boxes, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings furnished and forming part of the same, is a clear, true, and complete description of my invention and of a box embodying the several features thereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in boxes for bread, cheese, cake, or other purposes; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter desoribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to produce a receptacle for bread, cheese, cake, or other articles, which may be kept therein to prevent the same from becoming sour, moldy, or otherwise damaged by the closenessof the receptacle, as is now the case with the ordinary receptacles used for keeping the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention with the cover partly lifted. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the inner supplemental reticulated lid. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1
Referring to the drawings, the letter D rep resents my improved box, which may be made of tin, wood, or paper, and in rectangular or other forms, but preferably rectangular, and it is provided with a hinged lid, A, having the usual fastening devices, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the box may be properly secured. Near the top of the box I provide a supplemental lid, B, having reticulated material connected thereto, said lid being hinged to the back wall of the box, and it is provided with a ring, f, or other suitable device, whereby said lid Bmay be raised or lowered. The ends of the box are provided with solid top and bottom portions, 0 d, having interposed between them a panel, 0, of reticulated material,
(N0 model.)
which allows the box to be ventilated at these portions.
I attach importance to the fact that a receptacle constructed according to my invention permits of the same being thoroughly ventilated, and at the same time excludes flies and other insects from entering the same. I also attach further importance to the fact that my invention can be made of a sufficient size wherein clothing, sheeting, bedclothes and the like may be keptand prevented from becoming moldy or musty, which is now the case where such articles are kept in closed trunks and boxes. 7
I am aware that it is not new in a packingbox to provide the same with an inner transparent lid for the purpose of protecting the contents thereof, while at the same time they may be readily seen. Neither is it new to provide a range or other receptacle with an inner perforated door, and such I do not claim; but I am not aware that the particular construction set' forth and claimed, in which the box or receptacle has on its outer ends a reticulated portion and an inner cover of a like character, whereby lightness of structure is obtained, as well as perfectly securing the contents thereof.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- The herein-described receptacle, consisting of a rectangular body portion with solid end portions, 0 d, having an interposed reticulated panel, C, rigidly secured to said portions, the outer lid, A, and the inner supplemental lid, B, consisting partly of reticulated material, said lid B being hinged to the back body portion of said receptacle, said parts being combined substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SALLIE n. BoWERsooK.
Witnesses:
FRANCIS P. STEVENS, THOS. KELL BRADFORD.
