LEVI R. COMSTOCK, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN OYSTER-PACKING CANS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,083, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whoml it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI R. GoMsTocK, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oyster-Packin g Can; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of my locking-ring.
This invention has relation to means for packing oysters, milk, fresh fish, meat, and other perishable commodities for transportation; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ofthe devices forming the air-tight can, the armed case, and the hooplock, allhereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the body of the can 5 B, a flanch extending upparallel with the Wall of the can in such a manner as to form between said ila-uch and wall an annular space, a, designed to hold water'or other liquid, and to receive the anch b of the lid C, thus forming an airtight joint.
After the oysters or other articles are placed in the can with a suitable quantity of ice, and the lid properly attached, with its anch extending down into the water in the annular space a, the whole is designed to be Wrapped with flannel or other nonconducting material,
I and inserted into the case.
' D represents the case, usually made of wood. The case is hooped at the base and top at d e. The upper hoop d is usually covered with metal on the outside, and to this metallic ring are secured metallic bands h, which cross each other on the bottom 0f the case, and extend vertically up the sides of the case. E designates the cover of the case, preferably armed with metal around its edge at u, and designed to be let down within the edge of the wall of the case, so that its, upper surface shall be lush with said edge. Radial perforations m are made in the edgeof this cover to receive the points of the locking-bolts z which pass through the armed hoop d and case-wall. These locking-bolts are attached to a metallic ring, F, which extends around the case near its upper edge. This ring is not continuous, being provided with loops or eyes c at its ends, through which the link of a padlock or other secure connection may bepassed. The handles G are firmly secured t0 the annular arming u, which covers the upper hoop d.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a can and cover having a vertical ange, b, of an inner wall or ange, B, secured to the can-wall and forming an annular space, a, to receive said flange b of the cover.
2. The combination, with the case D, of the crossed suspensionbars h and metallic ring u having the handles G, substantially asspecied.
3. The combination, with the case D and cover E, of the ring F carrying the bolts z, designed to be inserted through the case into cover, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEVI R. GOMSTOCK.
