Be it known that I, MATTHEW FALooN, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, havev invented certainnew and useful yImprovements in Bed-Bottoms; and do hereby declare that the following is a fil, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tov the acccoinpanying drawing and to the letters of reference vmarked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in s'o'costructing and arranging the springs on bed-bottoms that the weight upon the same will'be at all times equalized; that is, in such a manner that il' a heavy person is lying on onejside, and a light one or none at all on the other side, the springs will nevertheless give equally, and keep the bed level, or, in'other words, I transfer the excess of weight on which ever side it may be to the other side.

In order to enable others skilled in the ait vto which my invention appertains to make' andnuse the same, I will now proceed to -describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 isa side view, and

Figure 2, a plan viewof my improved bed-bottom.

A represents the bed-bottom frame, and B B are the bed-slats, running longitudinally.

The slats B B and the end-pieces of the frame A are connected by vmeans of springs C O, made of spring-steel, or any other suitable material.

These springs are made of two, three, four, or more leaves, a a. The outside leaves are longerthan the inside ones, or, in other words, they gradually diminish in length from the outside to the inside, and

the ends of the leaves will stand alittle apart from each other.

A child or light person will spring the outside leaf, the next heavier one the next leaf, and so on until a very heavy person will vspring on the shortest leaf, and in this way equalize the weight at the ends of the generalbed.

These springs are attached to the slats B by means of loops b, fitting in inclined notches cut in the under side of the'slat near the ends, as shown in g. 2.

In the center of the frame A isa cross-bar, D, and under the slats B B above said cross-bar is another cross-bar, E.

These two cross-bars are connected by means of i three springs, C', constructed in the same manner as the end springs O O, but placedin a reversed position.

These springs equalize the weight of the persons the same as 'described for the end springs. The crossbar E prevents a person from lying in the shape of a trough, as` it.will prevent one slat from' going down further than the other.

The middle one of the' center springs O' acts as a pivot to theothers, as the large person lying on either side will cover vmore space thanl a small one, and presses down two springs and a part lof" the third one, thus making it a perfect equalizing bed-spring all over thebed.v It is `n .lsoperfectly nolseless.

The same kind and arrangement of springs may be applied to ear-seats, lounges, and other furniture where springs are needed.

The slats B B may be connected near their ends by means of straps, G G, as shown in g. 2.

Having thus fully described'iny invention,

What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.l The spring 0,-formedof two or more leaves, a. a', which are connected together 'at their lower ends, and disconnected at their upper. portions, as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the frame slatsB B, and vend springs G C, constructedand arranged substantially as-and for the purposes herein set'forth.

3. In combination with theframe A, slats B B, and

-end springs O O, the cross-bars D E and center springs O G', constructed and arranged substantially as and' for the purposes herein set forth.
