BLUE-PROTECTOR.
Application filed February 27, 1914.
.To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, l/VALTER PRESTON Tynan, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a guard or protector for the fines of tobacco curing buildings, such as barns. In curing tobacco throughout the rural districts, it is customary to hang the plants in barns and elevate the temperature therein by running a flue around the barn about a foot and a half from the bottom thereof and connecting one of its ends to a flue-box or furnace. These flues often become redhot, and a tobacco leaf or fragment dropping thereon becomes ignited and often sets lire to the entire structure. Fires of such origin are of frequent occurrence throughout the tobacco growing section of the coun try, and I aim to screen these lines so as to prevent falling leaves and particles thereof becoming ignited by contact with the heated surface.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a guard or screen of wire mesh, extending over and partly encircling that portion of a flue which extends within the barn, and novel means for supporting the netting or wire mesh andattaching it to the line.
lVith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation with the front wall of the barn shown in section. Fig. 2 is a view in section taken through the guard in a horizontal plane and upon one side thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the screen supports.
Referring in detail to the drawings by Specification of Letters latent.
or LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915. Serial No. 821,605.
numerals, 5 designates, generally, a tobacco curing barn of any size and shape such as is used by farmers, 6 a heating flue which extends around the barn near the floor thereof and which is attached or connected at one end to a flue-box or furnace 7, which projects through the wall 8 of the barn, so that it may be fed with fuel from the exterior thereof. The other end of this flue is projected through the wall 8 and extended upwardly, as indicated by the numeral 9, to cause the proper draft. The foregoing parts are merely illustrated to make clear the application of my device which is intended to guard against tobacco leaves falling upon the heated fine 6 and becoming ignited.
The guard, generally designated 10, is formed of a suitable material, such as wire mesh, as illustrated, and comprises a pair of oppositely inclined front walls 11 and 12, and side walls 13 and 14., The inclosure, formed by the wire mesh, follows the line of the flue and is supported properly there over by a plurality of supports, generally designated 15. Each support comprises a standard 16, having a headpiece 17 extending from the upper end thereof, and a clamp 18 attached to the lower end thereof. The headpiece 17 may be formed of a separate piece of metal from the standards 16, if desired, but in the preferred form as illustrated, it is formed by bending a fiat strip of metal downwardly from the upper terminal of the standard at an acute angle thereto, as designated by the numeral 19,
then again downwardly in a vertical plane, as indicated by the numeral 20, then back upon itself to lie against the inner surfaces of the walls 12 and 14, and finally extended to engage the inner faces of the walls 12 and 13, as shown.
The clamp 18 in the form of a ring slit at its underside and having its terminals bent outwardly to form connecting flanges 21 apertured, as indicated by the numeral 22, to receive a fastening bolt 28 upon which is threaded a nut 24. As many supports as necessary are provided; they may be easily and quickly attached to the flue, and hold the screen or guard properly thereover, so that the side walls 13 and 14 extend downwardly below the horizontal center plane of the flue. Reinforcing wires 25, the lower ends of the vertical arms of the head section 17, and the vertical walls 13 and 14 of the their lower edges screen are bent along finished conaround this Wire to form a struction.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided a very practical and efficient protector or guard for the fines of tobacco cur ing barns, which will absolutely prevent dropping leaves coming in contact with the fine, and consequently prevent numerous fires. Leaves dropping on the inclined walls 11 and 12 will slide therefrom onto the floor of the barn.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thu claim l. A flue protector of the character described comprising a wire mesh body having downwardly and outwardly inclined top described my invention, 1
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the walls and vertical side Walls; and a plurality of supports for said body, each support comprising a headpiece conforming to the shape of the body and engaging the walls thereof, a central standard and attaching means carried by said standard to connect the support to a flue.
2. In a device of the character described, a perforated body portion open along its underside and comprising a pair of oppositely inclined top Walls and side walls eX- tending vertically from the free edges of the top walls; and a plurality of supports for said body portion, each support comprising a standard, a split clamping ring secured to the lower end of said standard, and a headpiece formed on the upper end of said stand ard conforming to the shape of the body and engaging the interior of the walls thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
