To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. MOSHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fullerton, in the parish of Vernon and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to fans of the class of toilet fans and has for its object to provide a device of the character described that will increase the cooling properties of the article and furthermore will make an attractive advertising novelty adapted to receive advertising matter and because of its novel construction will be retained and for that reason will be more valuable than ordinary fans.
The invention consists in forming a toilet fan of a single sheet of material cut to form an opening eccentric to the middle of the sheet and then cutting the sheet on a straight line across the wider portion of the sheet and intersecting one side of the opening and overlapping the two free edges of the sheet so as to make the part of the fan immediately surrounding the opening slightly concave while the part adjacent to the overlapped portions is substantially Hat. A handle is secured in any suitable manner to the overlapped portions, and because of said overlapping the fan is reinforced at the handle, and the utility of the article thereby enhanced.
rlhe fan will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view in elevationof a fan made in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 a central vertical sectional view through the fan, the handle being shown broken away, Fig. 3 a top plan view, Fig. 4: a rear view in elevation of a modified form, Fig. 5 a front view in elevation of still another form, Fig. 6 a central vertical sectional view of the fan shown in Fig. 5, Fig. 7 is a view of a blank after being cut having handle portions integral with the edges of the vsuitable flexible material blank, and Fig. 8 a view of a fan assembled from the blank illustrated in Fig. 7.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Figs. l, 2 and 8 my improved fan is Shown constructed of a single sheet of material l such as paste-board or other having an opening 2 cut in the blank and the piece of material cut to one of the edges of the blank on the lines indicated by the lines 3 3, and the edges formed by said incisions 3 overlapped upon one another and secured to a handle 4 by driven fastenings 5, or any other suitable means. The opening 2 heretofore described is preferably formed eccentric of the center of the blade of material l, and the incision heretofore described made on a line extending across the widest portion of the blade from the wall of the opening to the outer margin of the blade.
By overlapping the edges made by the incision 3 upon one another as heretofore described, the upper portion of the blade is dished or formed concave as shown at 5 in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and providing a substantially scoop-shaped structure, while the lower'portion of the fan, as indicated by Fig. 6, where the handle 4 is secured and the blade l to said handle portion is formed substantially fiat. Furthermore the overlapped portions where the handle is secured form a reinforcement to straighten the lower portion of the fan so that if found desirable the handle may not necessarily extend but a short distance above the lower edge of the fan.
In using the fan it is held so that the concaved portion is the lower side of the fan, and by moving the fan downward and away from the face the air caught within the concavity 6 will be projected through the opening 2 against the face while the fan is moving away from the face so that a continuous current of air is kept in motion against the face, first by the blade l forcing the air toward the face, while the concavity is moving toward the face, then the air through the opening 2, as heretofore described, is projected against the face after the concavity passes the face and is moved away from it, and then when the fan is brought back the rear side of the fan will cause a current of air to strike the face thus getting two currents of air on the downward stroke of the fan, and one current of air when the fan is moved back to its original position.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of fan constructed in a substantially similar manner as the fan shown and described in regard to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in which the blade 11 is formed with a relatively smaller opening 12 and overlapped portions 13, and a series of openings 14, 15 and 16 arranged around the first mentioned opening 12. In this form of fan the air is projected through 1the opening 12 and also through the openings 14, 15 and 16 in the same manner as heretofore described as to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, but because of the openings 14, 15 and 16 the current of air through the opening 12 is broken up and the air is propelled against the face in a larger stream, but with not'the same force as in the fan shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.`
In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown another form in which the fan is formed of a blade 21 having rectangular openings 22 arranged slightly above the plane of the middle of the blade 21, other openings 23 arranged intermediate of the first mentioned openings and the upper edge of the blade and slightly smaller than the openings 22. The openings 22 and 23 are in pairs and arranged on two sides of the vertical median line of the blade 21 as shown clearly in Fig. 5. Located above the openings 23 is another opening 24 extending across the fan and intersecting the vertical median line, and 25 indicates a smaller opening than the opening 24 and shorter than said opening. The blade 21 of the fan shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is bent or otherwise formed into scoop shape as shown in Fig. 6 so that 4'5in use the air is propelled through the openings 23, 24 and 25 as heretofore described in relation to the other figures of the drawings.
In Fig. 7 isV shown a blank from which still another modification of the fan may be formed in which the blade 41 is provided with an eccentric opening 42 and an incision 43 extending from said opening across the Wider portion of the blade to the outer in argin thereof, and having tongues or projections 44 and 45 formed integral with the outer margin of the blank adjacent to the incision 43, and on each side thereof.
In Fig. 8 is shown a fan formed from the blank shown in Fig. 7 in which the two sides of the blade on each side of the incision 43 overlap so that the tongues or projections 44 and 45 are alined, said overlapped portion and the alined tongues or projections 44 and 45 being secured together in any suitable manner, and said tongues or projections 44 and 45 when so secured forming a handle for the fan.
When the fan is assembled as shown in Fig. 8 the upper portion is dished or formed concaved, as shown at 46, surrounding the opening 42 as in the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
I have shown the fan in Figs. 1 to 4 and 8 substantially circular in contour, and the openings in these forms also circular, but itv is to be understood that other contours of fans and the openings therein may be substituted when found desirable without altering the spirit of my invention, and if desired instead of forming the fans in these figures with the incisions 3, 13, and 43, as described and overlapping the edges of one another, the fans in these figures may be made concaved by pressing or otherwise shaping them, and I do not therefore desire to be limited to the construction shown and described eXcept where particularly set out in the claims hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a fan, a blade having an opening therein, and the blade surrounding said opening formed concave on one face.
2. In a fan, a blade formed with an opening eccentrically thereof, a handle secured to the widest portion of said blade, and the blade surrounding the opening formed concave on one face.
3. In a fan, a blade having an opening therein arranged eccentrically thereof, the Wider portion of said blade surrounding said opening being substantially fiat and having a handle secured thereto, and the other portion of said blade being formed concave on one face.
4. In a fan, a blade having a handle secured thereto, the portion of said blade secured to and immediately adjacent to said handle being substantially fiat, the remainder of said blade being concave on one face, and said concave portion being provided with an opening.
5. A fan having a blade made of a single sheet of material formed with an opening eccentrically arranged and an incision eX- tending across-the wider portion of said blade and intersecting the edge of said opening and the outer margin of the blade, the edges of said blade adjacent to said incision being overlapped upon'one anothery to form a reinforcement, a handle secured to said overlapped portion, the upper portion of said blade being formed concave on one face by the overlapping aforesaid, said concavity surrounding the opening in the blade.
6.
