G. H. STONE.
Billiard m1511001 Table BallPocket. v No. 239,200. Patented March 22,1881.
FlEj-l- Y MWA/5555 i 2 /NV/v TUR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
GARDNER H. STONE, OF SYRAOUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS W. MEAOHEM, OF SAME PLACE.
BILLIARD AND POOLTABLE BALL-POCKET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 239,200, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed February 7, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GARDNER H. STONE, of vSyracuse,in the county of Onondaga, in the State of- New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard and Pool Table Ball-Pockets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. isa full, clear, and exact description. The purpose of this invention is to provide ro a cheap, strong, and durable pocket for billiard, pool, and other analogous game tables. Such pockets have heretofore usually been made of worsted or other netting, which is incapable of withstanding for any length of r 5 time the wear they are subjected to, and has proved a source of constantexpense in repairs and renewal of said pockets.
To obvia-te these defects and their resultant expense, my invention consists, essentially, of zo a pocket formed of a blank struck or cut out ot' leather or other strong and suitable sheet material, and in any desired design, the bottom portion ot' the blank being formedfwith lingers or pendants, which are gathered around and secured to the usual center ring forming the bottom of the pocket, the upper edge of the blank being provided with eye1ets,for the usual attachment of the pocket to the covering of theguard-iron on` the table.
For a more specific description of my invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a detached view of the pocket 3 5 complete. Fig. 2 shows a portion of the blank from which the pocket is formed, and" Fig. 3
is a corner of a billiard or pool table to which the pocket is attached.
The. letter A, Figs. l and 2, representsmy 4o improved pocket constructed from the blank B of leather or other strong and suitable sheet material. Said blank may be of any desired design, cut or stamped out by a suitable die. The lower portion of the blank is provided with a series of lingers or pendants, E,
which are perforated at their extremities, and,
by a cord rove through the same, gathered around and attached to the common center ring, c, to forni the bottom of the pocket, and
at the same time preserve the proper shape or 5o form when the same is made up and applied to the table.
The upper outer part of the blank B is represented bythe letter D, Fig. 2, and is provided with eyelets d, through which a lacing passes, servingto secure the outer upper part of rthe pocket to the usual covering of the guardiron a on the table, as shown at Fig. 3.
The two side edges of -the blankB arelapped and united by cementing or other suitable 6o means, and the inner upper portion of the pocket thus formed is secured to the edge around the opening in the table b, Fig. 3, by tackin g it thereto.
` The upper outer portion of the pocket and the lower center piece are covered in the usual manner with an ornamental fringe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an article of manufacture, a pocket for billiard and pool tables, constructed from a blank stamped out of any suitable sheet material, and provided with fingers or pendants which are gathered around the common center ring and form the bottom of the pocket, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. The blank B, having its *lower portion formed with fingers E, and its outer upper portion, D, provided with eyelets d, snbstan- 8o tially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 2d day of February, 1881.
GARDNER H. STONE.
