le it known that l, HENRY lL. BETTEN, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda land State of California,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in cartons and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with sterilized material such as absorbent cotton and the like; and4 the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character wherein the material positioned therein is effectually protected against exposure to dust and germ laden air and from contact by the hands or other objects whereby the possibility of infection through the use of such material within the carton is reduced to a minimum.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts! of my improved carton whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

ln order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the aecompanying drawings, wherein-'- Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a carton constructed in accordance with Van embodiment of'my invention, the delivery end thereof being shown open; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through Fig. l, with' the delivery end in sealed condition; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in elevation of the partition member included in the following disclosure; Fig. 4 is a view, in perspective, of a part of a carton constructed in accordance with a. further embodiment of my invention; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4L but taken from the opposite side thereof and with the material adapted to be contained therein omitted; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view taken through the delivery end of a carton constructed in accordance with the embodiment of my invention wherein the element shown in Figs. 4 and 5 forms a part, the material to be contained in the carton being shown in applied position; and Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6, with the material adapted to be contained in the carton omitted, and illustrating a still further embodiment of my invention.

While l do not wish to limit myself as to the material from which such carton is produced, ll prefer to form the same from a blank of paper-board of requisite Weight divided longitudinally to afford the panels 1 1, each of such panels being provided at its opposite extremities with the extensions 2-2 serving to adord end closing naps. The carton is assembled from the blank in a manner which is believed to be self-evident and in a manner on which ll make no claim. ln order to e'ect a proper sealing of the end flaps, l find it wf advantage to provide one of such flaps with the tongue 3 adapted to interlock with an opposed Hap through the medium of a slot d produced therein.

Within the carton, when assembled, adjacent an end thereof, which end may be termed for convenience of disclosure the delivery end, l position a partition 5 adapted to adord at the delivery end of such carton an auxiliary chamber or compartment 6 for a purpose which will hereinafter be more particularly set forth. As herein disclosed,

the partition 5 is maintained in fixed position through the medium of the marginal danges 7 produced on the partition 5 and whichare adapted to be engaged with the adjacent portions of the interior faces. of the walls of the carton through the medium of a suitable adhesive. As herein disclosed, the partition 5 is formed of heavy paper or card-board and is provided, adjacent one of its edges. with a slot 8, suchslot being extended substantially entirely thereacross and disposed in parallelism with the adjacent wall of the carton., such wall being termed for convenience'of description as the top wall. Disposed over the slot 8 and suitably secured to the adjacent portions of the partition 5 of the outer face thereof and preferably by a suitable' adhesive is the flexible body or member 9, such as a strip communication therewith the upwardly di- Y rected vertical slots 11 so that the portion of the member 9 may serve as a compensating flap, for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully appreciated.

rlhe main compartment or chamber 12is adapted to receive the sterilized material which is herein disclosed as an elongated strip of absorbent cotton incased within a 4protective paper wrapping 14, in a' manner which is believed to be clearly apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, the length of such strip of cotton being such as to fill the chamber or compartment 12 when inserted therein. In applying the strip 14 within the chamber 12, such strip is first folded transversely to afford a plurality of superimposed loops, the direction of the loops being reversed continuously, with the uppermost ply having its free extremity, as at 15, projected beyond one end of the folded strip in order that it may be extended through the opening 8 in the partition 5 and be positioned in the auxiliary compartment 6 at the delivery end of the carton so that when it is desired to withdraw a certain amount of such material from within the chamber or compartment 12, the projected portion may be convenientlygrasped upon the unsealing of the carton and the requisite 'amount of material drawn through the opening 8, the upper lip of the slot 8 serving to afford a certain amount of tension on the apertured portion of the strip whereby it will be seen that entrance of dust or other foreign matter into the compartment or chamber 12 is effectually prevented, the flap 9 serving to compensate for any variance in thickness of the strip, as is believed to be self-evident. I do not wish, however, to be understood as confining myself to the particular arrangement of the partition 5 as I have found that other means may be employed with equal'facility to afford the requisite auxiliary chamber or compartment.

As disclosed in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, I employ an auxiliary container 16 of less length than the carton A, whereby the requisite auxiliary chamber or compartment 6a at the delivery end is afforded, as is particularly shown in Fig. 6. As is particularly shown inFigs. 4 and 5, it will be noted that the sides of the container 16 are open, with the upper marginal portion at one side thereof being provided with a depending flange 17 adapted to be connected, preferably by suitable adhesive, with the inwardly directed fianges 18 formed on the corresponding sidesof the end portions of the container, while one of such ends of the container at the opposite side thereof, particularly illustrated in Fig. 4, is. provided with' the inwardly directed flap 19. One side of the container being entirely open except for the flap 19, hereinbefore referred to, it will be observed that no obstruction is offered to the insertion of the folded layers 2() of cotton or other absorbent material therein. The flanges 17 and 18 assure the proper positioning of such layers Within the container 16 while the {iap 19, which is adapted t0 overlie the sides of such layers 20 after applied, serves to assure no obstruction to the insertion of the .container 16 within the carton A, as is believed to be selfevident. The forward end of the compartment `16 is provided with the slot 8 with which coacts the body or member 9, both operating in the same manner as has hereinbefore been set forth relative to the complementary elements 8 and 9.

In Fig. 7, I illustrate a still further means whereby the auxiliary compartment 6b may be afforded and in which instance the inner walls of the top and bottom of the carton Aare provided with the locking flanges 21 having their inner marginal portions free and with which are adapted to be interloeked the outwardly directed fianges 22, of the partition 5 whereby it will be readily perceived that such partition may be readily disengaged by the inward pressure while the tension created by the cotton or other material being withdrawn through the slot or aperture 8b serves to maintain such partition firmly in position.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a carton constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which absorbent material may be contained therein free from infection and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a container, a partition therein dividing the same into a plurality of coinpartments, said partition being provided with a slot adjacent a margin thereof, and a flexible bodysecured to the partition and overlying the slot, said fiexible body being slit to afl'ord an opening in communication with the slot and to provide a compensating flap normally overlying the opening.

2. A device of the character described comprising a container having its opposite ends open and provlded with means for closing said open ends, a partition Within and overlying the slot, said body having a 10 tongue struck therefrom to aord an opening in register with the slot.
