GG-GART coves;
Specification of Letters Patent I Patented Dan. 22, 1914.
Application filed February 21, 1913. Serial No. 749,328.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, lsanniyna SHERMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county-oi"? Kings and State or" New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Go- Cart Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to the class of go-carts or baby carriages, and more specifically to a go-cart or baby carriage cover.
An object of my invention is to provide a go-cart cover, capable of being detachably COilllS/il itl to the vehicle, in such a novel and peculiar manner as to render accidental removal thereof impossible.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a plurality of flaps or wings, connected to and forming a part of the cover, and so arranged as to serve as shields or covering for the child when desired.
A still further object of the inventioncontemplates the provision of suitable means connected to and forming a part of the coverseat, the same adapted to serve as a protector for the seat'and to prolong the longevity of the cover as well as the seat by reason of such protection.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
in describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein lilre characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional View of a go-cart, with a cover constructed in accordance with my invention, attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cover.
3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the seat pad or protector.
Before proceeding with the description of the drawings I desire to call particular attention to the fact that while I have evolved my invention with particular reference to go-carts, the same may be readily utilized in connection with vehicles of various types.
Proceeding now to the description of the drawings the numeral 1 designates a go-cart having the usual seat 2, back 3 and foot rest 4, all of which form no part of my invention are shown for the purpose of illustrating the same.
The cover is preferably composed of any suitable material such as velvet, leather, wool or the like and comprises a seat portion adapted to normally rest upon the seat 2 of the vehicle. Stitched or otherwise secured to one edge of the said portion 5 I provide a bacl: portion 6, of substantially the same s ze and shape as the back 3 of the vehicle to which the .cov r is applied. Upon the opposite edge or the seat portion and scoured thereto in a like manner, I provide a portion 7 which normally depends from he said seat portion 5 to the foot rest 4 of he vehicle. A foot portion 8 issecured to he other end of the said depending portion the said foot portion fitting snugly withinthe base 4 or" the vehicle. A covering 9 is in turn secured to the opposite or upper end of the foot portion 8 and extends parallel with the depending portion? to a point 10 in substantially the same plane as or in alineinent with the seat 5. of the cover. From the point 10 the said portion 9 eX- tends as at 11 so as to form a flap, the pur-- pose oif'which will be hereinafter fully described.
To facilitate the attachment of the cover, a flap 12 is provided at the upper extremity of the back portion 6, the said flap being stitched to the sides of the said back as at 13 so as to form a casing within which the upper extremity of the vehicle back 3 is fitted. By this construction it will be seen that lateral movement of the cover independent of the vehicle body is impossible.
Side Wings 14 are stitched or otherwise secured as at 15 to the seat portion 5 of the cover, as well as a portion of the depending part 7 of the cover, thereby leaving a portion of the said Wings 14 entirely free as is clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
When applied to convertible vehicles, that is vehicles being capable of use as baby carriages or go-carts, the wings of the cover, when the vehicle is used as the latter, are secured through the medium of straps 16 to he edge of the back portion 6 of the cover, thus forming Wind shields for the device, while the flap 11 is used as a covering, and is adapted to fit upon the lap of the child seated within the go-cart. If used as a baby carriage the wings 14 are disengaged from the portion 6 and, with the flap 11, are used as coverings for the child thereby effecting an efficient and reliable vehicle cover.
The peculiar construction of the cover at the base thereof afiords a cover or support for completely surrounding or inclosing the feet and legs of the child when seated or laid Within the vehicle, such construction being clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The structure above mentioned is made possible by reason of side pieces 17 being stitched or otherwise secured to the portions 7 8 and 9 of the cover.
To protect the cover seat, as Well as the vehicle seat a rubber pad or protector 18 may be secured in any suitable manner upon the cover seat and materially prolong the life of both the vehicle and cover seat portions. Any number of straps such as are shown at 19 may be employed for the pur pose of securing the cover in proper place upon the vehicle, in which event lateral movement of the cover independent of the vehicle is impossible, thus presenting a neat and attractive go-cart cover at all times.
From the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the wings 14: serve the double purpose of forming a shield and a cover, according to the use of the vehicle to which the cover is attached; that the flap 12 creates a casing within which the vehicle back is fitted, thus materially assisting the proper support of the cover in place upon the vehicle; and that the closure created by the novel and peculiar arrangement of the cover portions at one end thereof efiects the desired cover and shield for the childs feet and lower limbs.
It will be understood that the above description and the accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention, and that va rious minor changes in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement of 1;
portion, a base portion secured to said depending portion, a cover portion secured to 1 said base portion and extending parallel with said depending portion, side portions secured to the said cover, base and depending portions so as to form a closure at one end of said cover, a flap formed integrally With and projecting from one extremity of said cover portion, means including a pair of wings secured to said seat portion and extending throughout the length of said back portion, the said wings adapted to form either a shield or covers for the said vehicle, and means for fastening the said Wings to the said back portion, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
