Description
Jan. 4, 1966 Ti 5. MERCLEAN COVER FOR A BABY STROLLER Filed May 31, 1965 N A E L C R E m m5 U M W5 |E R O D O E H T ATTORNEY.
United States Patent l Filed May 31, 1963, Ser. No. 284,537 4 Claims. (Cl. 296-78) The present invention relates to a cover for a baby stroller or the like.
It has been proposed before to use wind breakers for baby strollers, or even protective structures for baby strollers, which provide protection of the child or baby sitting in the stroller to a limited extent only, because the wind breakers and the protective structures are disposed only at one portion of the stroller and are disposed in many instances vertically and do not provide protection for the baby or child against rain or snow.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a cover for a baby stroller, which is, preferably, made of plastic, transparent material, in order not to interfere with the free view for the baby and still to provide a sufficient and complete protection against rain and snow as well as wind.
With this and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective side view of a stroller having the cover designed in accordance with the present invention mounted thereon; and
FIG. 2 is a section along the lines 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, the cover 1 which is, preferably, made of heavy plastic, transparent material, so as to fold easily, comprises a front wall 2, a top wall 3 and oppositely disposed, substantially parallel side walls 4.
The cover 1, designed in accordance with the present invention, is, preferably, adapted to be used for a stroller, which has a canopy 5 so that the top wall 3 is capable of resting on the upper face of the canopy 5.
The adjoining edges of the respective walls 2, 3 and 4 are, preferably, of reinforced material, and are formed either integrally or are heat-sealed or sewn together along the engaging lines of the Walls, in order to bring about the intended configuration of the cover in its operative position and still permit an easy folding thereof, if not in use.
The open rear and bottom edges of the side walls 4 are likewise, preferably, reinforced, in order to prevent folding of the side walls, while the cover is in use.
An elastic member, as a rubber band, rubber ribbon, or a spring, is secured to the rear edges 7 of the side walls 4, close to their upper end, and is adapted to surround the pusher 8 of the stroller 9. The elastic band 6 extends from the connects the rear edges of the side walls 4 to surround the pusher 8 and is secured at the edge 7 of the opposite side wall 4, and in this manner retains the cover 1 safely in its rearmost position, while the top wall 3 engages the upper face of the canopy 5.
The bottom of the front wall 2 is bent over rearwardly, to form a slightly upwardly directed portion 10 of the front wall 2 and the lateral edges of the upwardly bent portion 10 is secured either by heat sealing or by sewing or by any other suitable means to the complementary lateral edges of the lower part of the front wall 2. By this arrangement, a bottom pocket 11 is formed, which is adapted to receive the bottom front portion of the foot rest 12 and in this manner, provides anchoring means for the bottom portion of the front wall 2 of the cover 1. While the pocket may suflice to retain the bottom portion of the front wall 2 on the foot rest 12 of the stroller 9, it is preferable to provide an elastic band 11' to the top edge of the upwardly bent portion 10 of the front wall 2,
3,227,484 Patented Jan. 4, 1966 whereby the formed pocket 11 engages tightly the foot rest 12 and prevents that the wall 2 slides off the foot rest 12 The side walls 4 can be extended downwardly to a greater or lesser extent, depending upon the type of baby stroller to which the cover 1 is applied, as long as the cover 1 provides sufiicient protection against wind, rain or snow for the baby or child sitting in the stroller 9.
In order to mount the cover 1 on the stroller, at first the elastic band 6 is moved over the pusher 8 of the stroller into a position slightly below the handle bar 13 thereof. Then the top wall 3 is brought into engagement with the top face of the canopy 5 and the front wall 2 and the side Walls 4 are pulled down until the bottom of the front wall 2 with its bottom pocket 11 is capable of being wrapped around the bottom end of the foot rest 12 of the stroller 9. In order to remove the cover 1, it is merely necessary to release the bottom pocket 11 of the front wall 2 from the foot rest 12 and to lift then the entire cover upwardly so that the elastic band 6 can slide upwardly along the pusher 8 of the stroller 9 :and the cover 1 can then be completely removed from the stroller and folded up.
It is quite apparent that the cover 1, designed in accordance with the present invention, provides sufficient protection against rain, snow and wind, for a baby or a child sitting in the stroller 9 without interfering with the view of the baby and without interfering with any access of air into the hollow space defined by the cover 1.
While I have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claims.
I claim:
1. A cover for a baby stroller having a pusher, a seat, a canopy and a foot rest, comprising a top wall having lateral edges, said top wall being adapted to rest on a canopy of a stroller, a front wall having lateral edges and extending steeply downwardly from the front end of said top wall,
oppositely disposed side walls extending downwardly from the lateral edges of said top wall to about the the height of said seat of said stroller at their rear portion and to about the footrest at their front portion, and extending rearwardly from said lateral edges of said front wall to form upwardly and rearwardly extending bottom edges, thereby defining a chamber closed at the top, the front and the sides, Y
elastic means extending rearwardly from the rear edge of said side walls from a point disposed close to the top of said side walls and connecting the latter,
said elastic means being adapted to surround the pusher of said stroller,
the bottom of said front Wall being bent rearw-ardly and upwardly and the lateral edges of said bent portion being secured to the corresponding edges of said front wall to form a pocket at the bottom thereof,
said pocket being adapted to receive the lower end of the foot rest of said stroller to retain said front wall between the front edge of said canopy and said foot rest,
elastic means for retaining said pocket on said footrest,
said walls are formed of transparent foldable material, and said elastic retaining means comprising an elastic band disposed at the upper edge of said upwardly bent bottom portion of said front wall in order to retain safely the formed pocket on the footrest of the stroller.
2. The cover, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the edges of each of said walls are heat sealed along the engaging lines with the other of said walls.
3. The cover, as set forth in claim 1, wherein 3 the edges of each of said walls are sewn together along 2,232,640 the engaging lines with the other of said walls. 2,453,843 4.
