Description

. Oct 1929- c. C OLLENDE R PROTECTING CANOPY F iled Sept. 15, 1928 I m v v YINVENTOR 7 Charles C'allencler ATTORNEY.

Patented t. 22, 1929 UNITED STATES CHARLES COLLENDER, or snoonrrru,v NEW YORK PROTECTING CANOPY Application filed September 15, 1928. Serial No; 306,144.

This invention relates to a protecting means designed and adapted for use in conjunction with baby carriages, cribs and closely analogous devices.

'1' he principal object of the invention is the provision of a protecting means of the indicated characters which may be'quickly and easily associated with a baby carriage, crib or the like, which will keep a baby harmless frompestiferous insects,- bugs, flies and mosquitos, which will allow a free circulation of air, which will enable a person to take up the baby from the carriage, also to give the baby a nursing bottle or to take up the bottle, and

also to give other articles to the baby, without requiring the removal of the protecting means from the carriage, crib or the like.

The nature of the invention and its distinguishingfeatures and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a view illustrating the body of a baby carriage with the protecting means of the invention applied thereto.

Fig. 2 is a plan view.

Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view.

In accordancewith the invention the protecting means is made from netting, either a single piece, or a plurality of pieces, properly cut and sewed together to produce a hood-like structure or canopy 10. This structure or canopy 10 is provided with a co'ntractable hem 11 along its edge, and in this hem 11 is inserted an elastic member or band 12 which extends entirely around the hem. The structure or canopy 10 is provided with a slit 13 extending preferably longitudinally thereof. The slit 13 is controlled by suitable slide actuated interlocking fastening means 14: adapted to be mani ula-ted to close the slit 13, and also to be manipulated to afford access through the slit. By reason of the contr' actable edge which will yield slightly when the slider of 215 the fastener 14- is actuated in either direction,

or when the baby projects hands or feet, the

pulling strain is distributed instead of being localized on the portions of the netting at the ends of the fastener, or where strained, and thereby tearing of. the netting is prevented.

From the foregoing it will be a parent that the protecting means having the fiaatures described may be readily applied to a body 15 of a baby carriage, crib or closely analogous device; the application thereof being effected by simply engaging the contractable edge of the structure or canopy 10 over the upper open part of the body 10. It will then bepossible to manipulate the means 14 for the purposes stated, with considerable convenience to a mother, nurse or attendant, while the baby will be protected, or be kept harmless frompestiferous insects.

I claim:

A baby carriage cover consisting of a body of netting adapted to fit over the sides of the carriage, the front of said body being provided with. an opening slit to permit access to the inside of the carriage without removing or disconnecting the cover from the carriage, a slide actuated fastener for closing said opening, and a contractable edge on the body adapted to yieldingly engage the carriage sides and prevent the netting from tearing when the fastener is opened and closed, the said contractable edge being substantially continuously secured to the body and extending substantially entirely around the carriage.

Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 13th day'of September, 1928.
