" GARMENT.
To all whom t may. concern: v s
Beit lrnownthat I, ALBERT MATHIAS, a
citizen lof the United States, residing at El Paso, vin the'county of lill Paso andrState of Texas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionV relates to improvementsin garments, particularly trousers, overalls Aand. similar garments of that character having a Waist-band and a front' placket or iy, the
object of the invention being to provide fastening means for ladjusting the waistband to hold the garment `supported upon the wearer and to simi iltai`ieonsly draw the meeting edges. of the "fly or `placlretginto proper position, the construction of the fastening or supporting means being such as to imitate or present the appearance of the use of an ordinary belt.
A further object ofthe invention is'I to provide a vgarment having fastening or supporting means `of the character described,
including] straps' forming extensions from the ends of the .Waist-band, v one of-` which straps is adapted to be passed throughan opening in the waist-band so that the vstraps may be extended in opposite directions on the outsidenof the waist-band to points ad-` jacent tlie sides of the garment andethere suitably fastened in position, by which` the waist-band may be easily and conveniently contracted as desired and the garment properly fitted upon the wearer.
A still further object of the invention is to provide ag garment having a fastening or supporter of the character described including. coperating- `members for yretaining the straps in position, which members .arev
adapted to simulate the appearance of the usual front buckle landv vthe waist-band ad-` justing straps at the sides .of ,the garment. With these and other objects in view, the
vinvention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangementv of parts, hereinafter fullyv 4deseridoed and' claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which:-`
Figure 1 is a fro t view .of .the waist portion of a garment embodying .my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view ywith the outer strap embodied, and showing certain .featuresof construction; Fig. 3 is a `detail sectiononl s y i Specification of Letters Patent. ,iPalj-ented Dec, 15 1914. implication med october 23,1913. semaine. 796,853. v
the.v line 3--3 in 1; and `Fig.'4 is a detail section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
, Referring `to the drawings,1 designates a pair ofoveralls, tronsersor other similar garment, having awaist-band 2 and divided at the frontto provide a placket or fly, the
overlapping meeting. edges of whichl are inidicated at 3y and 4. These meetingedges of Y the lwaist-band is provided substantiallyin line withthe meeting edge 4 ofthe placket orfly with a slit `or opening 7, and such `endof the Waist-band is preferably provided with a reinforcing member 8. rlhis reinforcing member may consist of a length of Wire disposed between .the plies ofthe waist-band and kcurved to, give proper form thereto .and adapted to-render the saidkportion` of the waist-band relatively stift' or rigid for proper guidance `andconnection of the waist-band straps, as. hereinafter described. '1 As shown, the reinforcing wire 8 has its `ends bent backwardly tok provide blunt `portions 9 tofpreventv it 'from penetrlating or pimcturinglthe fabric. The said outer end 6l of. the Waist-band, which is adaptedto lap over the innerv end 9 of the Waist-band,A isl provided with a fastening strap or extension,10,.and theiend 9 is pro-` vided with` a similar rfastening strap or eX- tension 11. In adjusting the waist-band to the person of the wearer, the [strap 11v is passed outwardly through the slit'oropening 7 and therespective straps 1.0 `andll extended,in opposite directions around the lfront of the waist-band, thel reinforcing member S'rendering the endu ofthe waistband sufficientlyv stiff" or rigid to permit the,`
strap ,11"to be passedthrongh the opening 7 with ease and facility. d y
It will be understood lfrom theforegoing description that by extending the straps k10 `and"11 in themanner -described, the waistband 2 may be contracted to the'desired degree. tot about .the `waistof. the'wearer and support the garment in the proper position upon the person, and.. that such .adjustment ofthe said straps also brings the meeting preferably applied to short'tabs. 13, securedl edges?) and l of the Hy or .placket in proper relative position-to be united bythe but.V
tons lor other fasteners 5.1,. `When the straps are so extended they givethe generala'ppearance of the use of the ordinary' belt, as
Well as a ldesirable finish to the Waist-band of the garment.
lThevfree ends of the straps 7 and Sarre` adapted to be secured in position by clamps, clasps or fastening members 12, Which are.
to the Waist-band adjacent the sides or hip portions thereof, whereby the Waist-band will be held securelyin adjusted position.-
These fastenings orclaspsareso arranged as to simulate the usual adjusting devices at .the'sides of trousersor a similar garment for the purpose of takingup any slack in .the waistband, thus giving kan attractive finish tothe Waist-band and garment as` al Whole and at thesame time further giving the impression Vof the use ofordinary adjusting devices iny connectionv Withan voutside belt.y For the purpose of holding the secured straps against relative movements and giving a further'desirable ornamentality of finish l may provide` an imitation buckle plate le to 'overlie' the strap y10 in line With the fly or placket and to conceal the v securely in place.
opening or slit 7.' As shown, this buckle plate is provided with tongues l5 stamped therefrom and adapted to be vpassed through the slit or opening 'i' and bear upon the rear side of the strap l0 to hold thev buckle platel in position, the buckle plate and tongues firmly engaging the straps and holding the same from relative sliding motions, thereby relieving the fastenings at the ends of the straps from overstrain. v
By reason of the fact vthat the slit 7,is
centrally located with respect to the gar-V ment, or with respect to the structure forming the deviceuof my invention, it is possible to dispose a buckle simulating or appearing plate overthe slot 7y in such a `manner as Lnot only to conceal the slot but also to carry out thesimulation of a belt, independent of the garment.` t j I From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings,'it Will be seen that my invention provides a fastener or supporter of the char-` acter described Whichis simple of construc-v garments, such as overalls, 'to add to the strength and finish thereof.y
