INVENTORS WITNESSES: MQLV W @MJ I county of Hbmnlton and State" '0 Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Impravements'inP-ie+Wrenches;- andwe do declare the :followmg to bee full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enableothers slcilled' in the art to which ,it appertains-to make anduse thesame, referenoe "being: had to the accompanymg drawings, and itothe-letters and fi ures of reference marked thereon, which orm a part of I this specification.
Ourinvention-relates to a device for sow-wing: and unscrewing pipe or casing audhasifor its obje t simpleand efl'ective meanssfor screwingo =1mscrewing said pipe or casing, giving elther a right or left hand rotation to the pipe without removing said wrench from the'pi e or casing or changing the position of sa1 lwrench with reference ---thereto.
In: the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a: plan er top .view of thewrench, and: Fig. 2' shows a side elevation of said wrench. ,1 I

7' may be placed in the side plates 5, b and the slots is, k, or one continuousslot in their place, beprovided in the jaw d,which;would be a mere transposition of parts and. embracing the invention. A
Having described the parts of the wrench Patentedflecal,
and designated them by the reference letters given above, the following is its operation: The'wrench is applied to the pipe orcasing by removing the pin it and swinging'the jaw d'about its fulcrum f permitting the wrench 'to be-placed upon: the pipe, after which the jaw 03 is closed and the pin 72. is inserted either in hole 9 or hole 3', depending upon which rotation is desired. If a ri ht hand movement of thewrench is desire that is a movement in the direction of the hands of a clock, when looking upon the wrench as shown in Fig. 1, the pin it is placed in the hole 1, passing through the slots is, in the side plates or cheeks b, b. The pin it passing through the hole 9 engages in the slots in both plates 1), b. A movement of the cause the jaws c and (l to close upon each other and grip the pipe in such amanner that the teeth 11,7), p will be brought into contact with its wall and rotate it in unison' with the wrench. The greater the resistance ofl'ered by the pipe against rotation the greater will be: the gripping action of the wrench jaws by reason of the leverage imposed by the short leverage or distance be tween the bolt 6 and the pin k. If a left hand rotation of the pipe is desired, that is a counter-clockwise direction, the pin it is removed and placed in the hole j, passing through the slots k in both the plates or checks 1), b. A movement of the handle a in a counter-clockwise direction will then handle a in. a clockwise direction will then cause the jawsv 0 and d to close upon the pipe and bring the teeth 12, p, p in gripping contact with the wall thereof causing a rotation in the counter-clockwise directwn, and as the resistance to rotation offered by the pipe increases, the pressure of the jaws thereon" increases by reason of the leverage exerted through'the short leverage or distance from 'bolt e to pin it in hole 7', said increase in of the jaws serves as a fulcrum pin for drawing the jaws together and that it has its bearing against one end of the slot in which it'lies, or otherwise stated against the web or neck between the slots, on one side or the other thereof, according as the device isv moved in one direction or the other in its clamping operation.
The device permits of a rotation ofthe pipe or casing in either directionwithout removing the wrench therefrom and in that respect possesses advantages over the pres ent forms of wrench, which necessitates a removal from the pipe and reversal of position in order that the gripping may take place for rotating in the opposite direction.
When the Wrench is removed from the pipe or casing the swinging of the jaw a out of position with respect to the handle a is limited by the stops Z and 0 on the jaw a coming in contact with either the stops m on the handle a or the stop piece n on the plates'or cheeks b, or both.
It is intended that this wrench shall be provided, with a number of jaws a and (l of.
iflerent capacities similar in design to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so that the wrench may be used on pipe of different diameters,
"the substitution of jaws being readily accomplished by removing the bolt 6 and inserting the jaws of larger capacity in the place occupied by the removed jaws.
We prefer to use the individual slots k and k as shown in Fig. 1 in the side plates or cheeks 6, instead of making one continuous slot as hereinbefore mentioned although .the invention in its broadest sense e'inhaces both forms. V
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent,- is
1. In a wrench, an operating handle, and a pair of jaws hinged together. and one of them plvotally connected to the handle, wa t.
on the fulcrum side of the wrench, to adapt the wrench ,to turn an object to the right or to (the left according to the adjustment of the fulcrum pin.-
:2. In a wrench, an operating handle and a I pair of jaws hinged together and one of them pivotally connected to the handle," and a shiftablefulcrum for connecting the handle and adjacent end of the other jaw, said fulcrum comprising a pin interchangeable from one to another of a plurality of registering openings formed respectively in the handle and the adjacent end of one of the jaws, one
- set of the openings being elongated and forming a fulcrum bearing for the pin, to adapt the wrench to turn an object to the right or to the left according to the adjustment of the fulcrum pin.
3. In a wrench, anoperating handle and apair of jaws hinged together and one 'of them pivotally connected'to the handle, a shiftable fulcrum for connecting the handle and adjacent end of one jaw, said fulcrum comprising a pin interchangeable from one to another of a plurality of openings formed on the fulcrum side of the wrench, to adapt the wrench to turn an object to the right or to the left according to the adjustment of the fulcrum pin, and coacting stops formed respectively on the handle and one of the jaws to limit the movement of the handle and jaws in respect to each other.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of twowitnesses. EUGENE KIBELE. WALTER G. VREELAND. Witnesses:
