To all 'whom it may concern A Be it known that .,I, SYLvEsTEE GROLL, of Philadelphia, in the 4county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and nsefnl Improvement inthe Mode of Attaching Bells to Horse- Harne'ss, 85e.; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact ldescription of the same, reference being had to Athe accompanying drawing, in, which- Figure 1 represents my invention,

My invention relates to an improvement infthe mode of attaching bells to horse-harness, Sto. ;and

It consists in a i'ame to which the bell'is rigidly attached, said frame being provided `with a socket tol receive the end of the harness-hame or other supporting point.

The practice of attaching bells'` to the harness of horses employed to draw street-cars, &c'., is now very extensively adopted, and it is found that theconstant swinging of said bells, as they have hitherto been attached, has an effect to canse sores upon thejhorse when the bell is suffered to come ineontact with. his skin, andalways rapidly to wear out-both the bellfand its support, so `that the expense of renewal is frequent and considerable.

`To obviate -t'hese disadvantages, as well as to providev a" more ornamental` mounting for thc bell, has been the object of my invention. I am aware that sockets have been employed as a means of attachment, butI am not aware that bells have ever been secured to harness, or elsewhere,.by means similar to or possessing the same advantages as' those I have invented.

I am aware that a'plate of metal'secur'ed at its ends to the'two hames has been made t0 support a series of bel1s, bnt this differs from my invention inasmuch as it`gis only temporarily attached and is removed before the harness can be removed i'oxn the horse.

. My bell frame is designed to hold only a single bell and to be permanently attached to the hame.

I am also aware ot' the invention of Charles Kirchho`,'issned September 29, .1863, but said invention diers from mine. because it is only shown `and described, and was only intended to be attached t'o the Saddle ofthe harness, where it will necessarily interfere with the check-rein; 85o., whereas mythen-holder Ais applied only to the haine and secured in a different manner.

What I claim as new, is- The bell A and socketed frame B, constructed subf stantially as described, to form a bell-monnting for harness, as set forth.
