Description

NFErERS. PHOTO-UTHGGRAFMER, WASHINGTON D C www IMM kan 0W.. m., M .@W my UNITED 'STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
Y .0. K. MARSHALL, OFVNEVV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
v| MPRovED HoRsbcoLLAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent-No. 85,747, dated January 12, 1869; antedated January r2,1869.
To all lwhom it 'may concern Be it known that I, C. K. MARSHALL, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved collar with trace-clip and rein-eye7 attached. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with hames attached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view at the line w Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a sectional view at the line y y, Fig. 2.
The object of my invention is to produce a cheap, light, elastic collar, one that will not chafe or gall the horse, and which can readily be made to exactly conform to the contour of the neck and shoulders of the animal.
The nature of my invention simply consists in constructing the collar hollow and of the semi-shell-shape form. The collar is rendered much lighter and its elasticity greatly increased by constructing the saine with numerous perforations. These may be either circular, oblong, or of any other form that the taste of the manufacturer may suggest. Within the concavities of the collar-plates are secured the rein-eye and also the trace-clip. These may be secured by independent bearin gs, or attached to a hames-bow,77 in the ordinary manner, in which case the hames are permanently secured to the collar.
A collar constructed in accordance with my invention is susceptible of the highest degree of ornamentation, and is equally applicable, it matters not whether designed for the purposes of pleasure or intended for the use of the draft-horse.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the collar-plate, and is hollow and semishellshape in form. The surface may be plain, as shown in Fig. 2, or perforated, as shown at a a in Fig. l. The objects of these perforations, which may be of any desired shape, is to render the collar lighter, and also to add to its elasticity.
The plates A A may be made of any metallic substance7 either cast or sheet iron, of wood, gutta-percha, hard rubber, or any other composition that may be found suitable for the purpose.
Vhen the plates A A are made of iron or other cast metal, the castings are made in the ordinary manner; when of sheet metal, they are swaged, struck up, either hot or cold, or formed with dies orin molds. The metal form may then be covered with paint or gilded, or coated with hard rubber or its equivalents. When the plates A A are made of wood they may be carved and steamed or swaged into the desired form.
When the use of hames is dispensed with the plates A A are provided with eyes B B, by means of which the collar-plates are united together by means of suitable straps or other convenient means; or, instead of having duplicate plates, the collar may be made in 011e piece.
When the hames C are used the bows of the same are permanently secured by rivets brazed, or other equivalent device, within the cavity of the plate A, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. When so arranged the eyes B B are not at tached to the plates A A, but to the ends of the hames-bow, as shown at c c. To the hames O C, I attach, by means of rivets d and '0, or other equivalent means, the vtrace-clip D and rein-eye E.
When it is desired to dispense with the use of the hames the trace-clip F and rein-eye G are securely attached by means of plates f and g to the collar-plate A. These plates f and g have their attachment-rivets, or other equivalents, within the concavity and to the sides of the plate A.
These plates may be highly ornamented and enriched with any appropriate design or figure that taste may suggest.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
l. The semi-shell-shape plates A A, either with or without the perforations a., when the seme are made substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the semi-shell A and haines-bow C, when the latter is permanently secured Within the concavity of the former, substantially as described as and for the purpose specied.
3. Securing Within the coneavity ofthe se1nishelLshape collar a braceelip and rein-eye, Whether the same are attached to it harnesboW or secured by independent bearings, substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subseribing witnesses.
C. K. MARSHALL. Vitnesses:
EDWIN J AMES, J oHN S. HoLLINGsHEAD.
