L. W. ZAAR & J. UBELAKER.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
THE NORRIS PETERS CO. PHOTO-LITHO.. WASHINGTUN. D. C4
UNrrED srA'rns BOX-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nev. 1v, 1914..
Application filed April 9,1914. Serial No. 830,620.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, LUDwre W. ZAAR and JOSEPH UBELAKER, former subjects of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, who have declared our intention of becoming citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to ties for boxes, and more particularly to ties for paper boxes.
The object of this improvement is to provide a simple and yeffective means for tying up a paper box and providing a handle therefor.
A further object is to provide stiifening means for reinforcing the sides of the box. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
fith these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a view, in perspective, of a box equipped with a tie embodying our invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the same taken near the central p0rtion of the box.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, comprises a paper box 3 of the set-up type, but may be of any form of foldable box having a removable lid. A. lid 4L provided with flanges 5 is fitted on the box 3 in the usual manner.
Our invention consists in providing a tie for a box of the character mentioned and may be applied to any size orshape of such box. The tie consists of cords 6 and 7. The ends of each of said cords are passed through suitable openings in the sides of box 3 and a suitable washer 8 on the inner wall of the box. At the inner side of washers'S the cords 6 and 7 are knotted or otherwise enlarged to prevent the ends thereof from passing through said washers. The cords 6 and 7 are of such lengths that when secured to the box 3 they may be passed over the corners 9 of the lid to a position such as indicated by dotted lines 6 and 7 in Fig. l. Then in this position the lid at may be removed in the ordinary manner.
rl`he cords 6 and 7 when placed in the positions indicated by full lines in the drawing are adapted to hold the lidv from vertical movement on box 3 and are held in said positions by means of the handle member 10. The handle member is provided with hooks 11 at its ends adapted to engage the cords 6 and 7 and the latter may be unhoolred or freed therefrom in order to move them to their dotted line positions for opening the box.
The construction set forth provides a box tie which not only binds the lid to the box but by means of the ends of the tie passing around the fiange 5 of the lid and into box 8, the top edges of the box are bound firmly against the inner side of the flange 5. This provides a means for stiftening the box walls so that the box is strengthened and eliminates to a great degree, dam- .aging goods contained in the box through rough handling.
Vilhilewe .have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a box, a lid on said box and a flange on said lid extending over the top edges of said box, of a tie comprising two cords, each having its ends secured to the upper central portions of two adjoining sides of said box and portions extending over corresponding parts of said flange and said lid, each of said cords being of n length so that its central portion will just names to this specification in the presence pass over the upper corner between lts oon of two subscrlblng Wltnesses.
responding sides of the box; a member be- LUDWIG W ZA ALR tween the Central parts of seid Cords; and A hooks on said member engaging said cords JOSEPH UBELAKER' locking the letter in operative condition, `Wtnessesz substantially as described. JOSHUA R. H. Po'ms,
ln testimony whereof We have signed our` HELEN F. LILLls.
Gopes of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
