To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLAnnNon O. Momma, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Elevating and Dumping Apparatus, of which the 'l.ollo\ving is a specification.

This invention relates to an apparatus for handling packing boxes or cases and is especially designed for use in unpacking cases containing large quantities of sheet paper or other merchandise, which is desired to be stored in a stacked condition.

The primary object of the invention is to produce an apparatus which will allow of the case being inverted and the contents removed therefrom without destroying the ar rangement or position of the same upon lifting the case therefrom.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means for lifting the box from the floor and allowing the same to be inverted, said means being adjustable whereby to accommodate itself to different sizes of cases.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an attaching element whereby the lifting means maybe readily and quickly associated with the ease and detached therefrom when desired, said element serving also to provide means for reversing the case.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of the class described which is simple in construction, inexpensive to produce and thoroughly efficient for the purpose for which it is intended.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, fully described and pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the case lifted from the floor.

The means for handling the box includes a pair of horizontally arranged stringers 12, which are provided. with bearings for the reception'of a fixed pulley l3, and adjustable pulleys 14-. The latter being preferably received in one of a number of bearings 15, whereby the same may be spaced apart to .correspond to the width of the case which is to be handled. Arranged on one of the side walls of the room in which the apparatus is installed is a drum 16, having one end of its shaft pro- Vided with a ratchet 17, and a gear 18, which meshes with a second gear 19, having an operating handle 20. A pawl 21, is mounted to coact with the ratchet as will be readily understood. Secured to the drum 16, are the loads 22 and 23, of a cable which is adapted to be wound upon the drum. These leads are respectively trained over the stationary pulley 13, and the adjustable pulleys 14, and are provided on their terminals with the knots 24, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. I also provide a harness for the box or case which comprises a combination closure and receiving table 25, having lugs 26, extending from its opposite ends. The lugs are slotted as at 27, for the reception of the hooked terminals 28, of an attaching plate 29, the latter being also provided with a pair of trunnions 30, extending outwardly from the lower corners thereof. The attaching plate is also provided with a key-hole slot 31, which is adapted to receive the extremity of the lead of the cable to detachably associate the same therewith. The harness also includes a bar 32, which is adapted to underlie the case 10, as shown and which is provided with the pulleys 33, near its outer extremity. The leads of the cable are also t *ained around these pulleys as shown and the portions of the leads extending from the pulleys 33, to the pulleys 14c, are adapted to work between the trunnions 30.

In the modified form of the attaching plate shown in Fig. 6, the same is constructed of two portions 35, and 36, the latter carrying the hooked terminal 28, and the former the trunnions 30, and the keyhole slot 31. It will be noted that both of the portions 35 and 36, are provided with registering slots 37, through which are passed plate are applied to the slots 27, of the lugs 26. The handle 20, is then operated and when the harness containing the case has been elevated to the desired height, the same is swung as will be better seen in Fig. 2, using one of the trunnions 30., as a pivot on the lead of the cable. Then the case has been inverted, the drum is operated to lower the member 25, which is received on the usual truck 84. The cable is then slackened and it will be readily understood that the case may be lifted; from the contents, thus leaving the same in a stacked condition upon the member 25. The lugs 26, may then be used as hand grips in lifting the merchandisc from the truck to, any desired point.

While I have shown and described a simple and preferred form of carrying my invention into practice, I do not wish to be restricted to the exact details therein shown but desire to reserve the right to make such changes, and alterations as fall within the scope of the appended claims;

What is claimed asnew is 1. An apparatus for dumping the contents of open end containers, comprising, means for elevating the container withits open end upper-most, means to allow the same to be inverted and means, serving to close the open end thereof during the inverting operation and acting as a receiving table for the con tents of the container when inverted.

2, An apparatus for dumping the contents of open end containers, comprising, means for elevating the container, with its open end upper-most, means to allow the same to be turned to arrange the open end at the bottom and means serving to close the open end of the container during the turning movement and acting as a, receiving table for the contents of the container when inverted.

An apparatus for dumping the'contents of open end containers, consisting of aha-r ness comprising devices adapted to be arranged at the upper and lower portions thereof, means for clamping the same together and means for elevating the harness, a portion of the harness being adapted to act as a receiving table for the contents when inverted.

5. An apparatusfor dumping the contents of open end containers, comprising, a closure and receiving table adapted to close the open end, means. for lifting the container and means co-acting with the closure and receiving table. and lifting means to retain the closure in position relative of the same and operatively associate the lifting means with the container.

6. An apparatus for dumping the contents of openend containers, comprising, a closure and receiving table adapted to close the open. end, an attaching plate co-acting with the closure and the lifting means to operatively associate the lifting means with the container and retain the closure in position relative of the box and means on said at taching plate co-acting with the lifting means whereby to allow the boX to be inverted.

7. An apparatus for dumping the contents of open end containers, comprising, a harness consisting of a closure and receiving table, adapted toclose the open end thereof, slotted lugs provided at the opposite extremities of the closure, an attaching plate having hooked terminals engaging the slot ted portions; of the lugs, a bararrang-ed beneath the container and lifting means; C9? acting with the attaching plate and the bar toretain the bar and the closure in clamped position on the container.
