D. BRODERICK.
LIFTING AND CARRYING DEVICE. No. 570,622. Patented Nov. 3, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DANIEL BRODERICK, OF LAUREL HILL, NEW YORK.
LIFTING AND CARRYING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming 'm of Letters Patent No. 570,622, dated November 3, 1896.
Application filed June 27, l 89 6- To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, DANIEL BRODERICK, of Laurel Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Lifting and Carrying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide both for lifting and carrying heavy bodies by hand and for hoisting and moving such bodies by a crane or derrick.
A lifting and carrying device embodying my invention is especially adapted to the lifting and carrying of hot ingots and other heavy castings in foundries and other iron and steel works.
I will first describe the invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, and afterward point out its novelty in claims.
Figures 1 and 2 are views taken at right angles to each other of a lifting and carrying device embodying my invention.
A A are two similar levers, each having one arm bent downward, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a foot (0, adapted to bear upon the body to be lifted. These levers are pivoted together by one pivot 17 and pivoted by the same pivot to a shackle B. To this shackle a pair of grappling-hooks C O are pivoted by a pivot 0, arranged transversely to b. One of the levers A is shown in Fig. 2 as having its foot a broken away to better show the shackle and the grappling-hooks. Each lever A is represented in Fig. 1 as having its arms 01 prolonged considerably beyond the foot a of its other lever to form ahandle, and the two levers are shown as having their arms (Z connected by a chain-sling D, the long handles providing for the lifting and carrying of a heavy body or load by two men and the sling providing for the hoisting of the body or load by a crane or derrick.
To lift a body or load, as F, by hand with this device, two men, taking hold of the handles cl, place the grappling-hooks across and over the body, as shown in Fig. 2, so that both feet a Ct will bear on the top of it, as shown in Fig. 1. The body may then be lifted by the two handles cl, the grappling-hooks being Serial No. 597,121. (No model.)
drawn together tightly upon it by the action of the levers A A. To lift or hoist by the sling, the grappling-hooks and levers are placed in the same manner on the body, and when tension is put on the sling the levers draw in the grappling-hooks, so that the body may be moved by the sling to the place desired.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that the grappling-hooks O O are provided on their heads with horns e, which project upward through the shackle. These horns serve the purpose of preventing the hooks from dropping farther than is desirable when they are left free, and they also serve the additional purpose of facilitating the detachment of the hooks from the removed body F after it has been deposited where desired. This detachment is efiected by simply canting the levers A and the shackle sidewise in either direction far enough for the shackle to press against one of the said horns and lift the corresponding hook clear of the load. This frees both hooks.
In case the lifter and carrier is to be used altogether with a crane, derrick, or hoisting apparatus, the handles cl may be omitted and the levers A maybe only as long as required to make proper connection with the sling D.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a lifting and carrying device, the combination of two levers and a shackle all pivoted together by one pivot and a pair of grappling-hooks pivoted to the shackle, substantially as herein described.
2. In a lifting and carrying apparatus, the combination of two levers one end of each of which is adapted to bear upon the body to be lifted, a shackle to which said levers are pivoted by one common pivot, and a pair of grappling-hooks pivoted to said shackle and provided with horns projecting upward through and beyond the shackle, substantially as here-' in described.
DANIEL BRODERIOK.
