IVILLIAM E. DUTHIE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
HANDLE AND FASTENER FOR PAPER VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 703,050, dated June 24, 1902.
Application filed October 24, 1901. Serial No. 79,839. (No model.)
To (tl w/tom it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. DUTHIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Handle and Fastener for Paper Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in means for holding closed the cover of a vessel having folding or hinged cover members.
The object of my invention is to produce a device of the class specified which may be readily applied to any form of vessel of the class described and of such character that the cover members of the vessel may be securely held closed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vessel provided with my improved handle and fastener. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the handle and attached fastener. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the handle alone. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modified form of the fastener.
In the drawings, 5 5 indicate the arms of a handle 6, preferably formed of wire. Each arm 5 is provided at its lower end with an 0&- set or projection 7 and below this a portion 8, which may be passed through or hook into the side of the vessel 9. The fastener consists of a strip 10, preferably of metal, having a pair of depending ends 11. Formed through each member 11 is a slot 12, through which the arm 5 of the handle maybe passed.
In operation with the cover members 13 of the pail 9open the fastener will lie at the top of the handle, the members 11 thereof being slid upward along the arms 5 of the handle to the position shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1. After the cover members have been folded down into position the fastener is slipped down along the handle until the offset portions 7 will pass into the slots 12, the lower end of each slot taking under the adjacent offset. In this position the main portion of the fastener is held against the free ends of the cover portions of the pail, so as to hold them in position.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4 the slot 12 is continued entirely across the middle portion of the fastener, so that it may be slipped onto the handle after the hooks 8 of the handle have been introduced into the pail. This construction of the fastener allows a more compact nesting of the completed vessels provided with my improved handle and fastener for shipment. So far as I know I am the first to provide a fastener for the covers of vessels of this class which is movable upon the handles.
I claim as my invention- 1. A handle and fastener for vessels of the class described, consisting of a U -shaped handle having oifsets formed thereon, and a fastener having depending ends each of which is provided with a slot to receive the U of the handle and to cooperate with the offset portions, substantially as described.
2. V A handle and fastener for vessels of the class described, consisting of a U -shaped handle, having offsets formed thereon, and a fastener 10 having depending ends and a slot extending through the middle thereof and into the depending ends to receive the handle and cooperate with the offsets of the arms thereof, substantially as described.
