To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. COOLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britaim in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut have invented a new and Improved Drinking-Cup,.of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of drinlring vessels more generally known as sanitarv caps, which are designed for individual and frequently a comparatively short use, and the object of the invention is to provide a cup of this class that may be cheaply made and that will satisfactorily withstand the uses to which they may be put.
Forms of devices embodying my invention. and in the use of which the obiects herein set out may be attained are ilustrntcd in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in central vertical section of one form of on embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a otto n view of the same. Fi 3 is a like view showin a slightly ifi'erent form of construction.

In the construction of cups of this kind it is necessary that the material should be as inexpensive as possible, and that the on while being comparatively light, should e sufiiciently strong to withstand the uses to which it may be put and also be liquid tight. I have found that a cup having a body com osed of paper may be em loyed and that tlie bottom may be cheaply ormed in a way to provide an extremely tight and strong device of this character.
The cups herein shown and described and embodying my invention each compose a button formed of any suitable material and sufficiently com act and rigid to form a strong support or the extremely thin body formed of paper and also for the. binding member between which and the button the lower edge of the body is clamped to form the bottom of the cup.

piece is out to the required shape and is ormed into a tube lar e'r at the top than at the bottom, as'clear y shown in Fi l of the drawings. The ends of' this piece are'secured together in any suitable manner, as by means of an adhesive, thus forming a joint extending lengthw'se of the cup body. The bottom edge the cup is turned to form a lip 7 extending inwardly and a button 8, of a size 'to closely fit the inner part of the body at the bottom is inserted from the top and pushed into place against the lip 7, the parts'thns fitting s ugly together and closin' the bottom of tie cup against outflow of iquid that may be con ain'ed therein.

This plate may be secured in'p'lace in anysuitable inannet,- as herein shown pins 11 passing through the plate, through the lip 7 and through or into the button 8 bein employed. This provides a bottom for t e cup of suflicient size to revent the cup from easily overtipping. his button and plate may be composed of any suitable material having suflicient density and rigidity for the purpose, it having been found that paper suitably formed will accomplish the purpose, but any other suitable material may be employed.
In the form of device shown in Fig. 3, the body 6 is constructed as herein above described and the button 12 is forced into place, but in this form of cup, the lip hereinabove described is omitted. The button 12 may be slightly grooved as at 13 at its edge an a binder ring 14 of any suitable material may be employed to securel bind the thin ha y to theutton thus orming an extremely secure and strong construction. The bottom being composed of any suitable material as hereinabove described.
In the structure shown in Fig. 4 the body 6 is constructed as hereinbefore described and the button 8 may be of the same form as that shown in Fig. 1, being somewhat thinner, however, in this form of the device. This button and binding plate may be formed of any suitable material as above described, and in fact a suitable construction may be obtained by taking a piece of material of a size in diame'n-r equal to that of the plate and cutting a round hole in its center of a size equal to the button the part removedbeingthe button 5 which is forced into place after the loweredge of the body'6 has been placed in thzarqi ening thus formed in the plate.

\Vhile I have shown and described herein Cr'rthin forms of cup embodying ny invention, I do not confine my invention to its embodiment in such form, as these may be departed from to a greater or lesser ex- 1 being shown cylindrical. The button 11 15 also fortned aisf'hereinabgve set out, but

.I claim V 1. A drinking, cup including an openended body of extremely thin, flexible, colla'psible material, a button composed of comi paratively stiff, rigid material closely fitting within the body; and a strengthening member tightly fitting aid body to clamp it-to the button and ho d it in place and providing a wide flange to support the cup in an upright position.
2. A drin'ki'ng cup including an openended tubular body of thin, iflexible, collapsible material, a button composed of coml paratively stifl', rigid material tightly fitting within the bottom, and a strengthening member consisting of a flat clisk secured to the body to resist the strain exerted by the button, said disk being of a diameter much greater than the bottom of the cup andprojectinlg beyond the sides in a plane at right angles to the axis of 'the cup to form a support therefor.
