OARTY, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Wellington, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Latch Device for Irrigating Dividing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to a latch or locking device applicable to irrigating dividing boxes, and operable to lock the dividing board or gate, at any adjusted position, whereby the flow or diversion of Water into the lateral may be properly controlled.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a latch or locking device of the nature indicated, which shall be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as simple, practical and efiicient in its use, the present device being of such construction, as not to interfere with the flow of the water along the irrigating main, or into the lateral.

It is also the object of the present invenwhereby the free end of the gate or divid-v ing board will also be guided in its swinging movements.

With the foregoing general objects out lined, and with other objects in view, which will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the present invention resides in the combination and ar rangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a dividing box of an irrigating main, illustrating'the improved latch device applied Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the dividing box, taken along the dividingboard or gate.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary or prevailing type of dividing box, having the opening 2 in one side, for the admission of Water from the main, in which the dividing box is disposed, into the lateral or irrigating. ditch. The water flows through the box in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. That side of the dividing box having the opening 2 is provided with a partition 3 projecting therefrom, and to which the dividing board or gate 1 is hinged. The dividing board orv gate 4 pro jects'forwardly beyond the opening 2, and is adaptedto be swung between the sides of the dividing box, for diverting the water from the main into the lateral, as is Well understood The dividing board or gate 4 is also adapted to close the opening 2, when swung against the respective side of the dividing box,as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the dividing board or gate 4: may either control the amount of Water admitted into the. lateral, or may shut off the supply of water to the lateral.

In carrying out the present invention, a break board or cleat 5 is secured to the bottom of thedividing box 1 slightly in ,ad-

vance of the dividing board or gate 4, and is disposed transversely with its ends projecting to the sides of the dividing box. A strip or plate 6 is secured upon the break board or cleat 5, and has its; rear edge projecting beyond the said board or cleat, the rear or projecting end portion of the strip 6 being provided with a series of staggered apertures 7 J p i The free or forward end of the dividing board or gate 4 is arranged to move adjoining the rear edge of the strip 6, and an upright bar or strip 8 is secured to the free end of the dividing board, and has its lower end bent angularly to provide a foot '9 working snugly under the free or rear edge of the retaining or guide strip 6, to assist in guiding the dividing board or gate 4 for swinging movements. The foot or angular end 9 of the strip 8 is provided with a slot '10 adapted to successively register with the 4, and projects beyond the free end thereof,

the locking strip 11 being adapted to rest upon the pro'truding portion of the strip or leaf 14, s'aid protruding portion of the strip or leaf 14 having a slot 15 corresponding with theslot 10 of the foot or angular end 9 of the strip 8- secured to the free end of the dividing board or gate.

A latch-bolt 16 is in'sertible through the alinin'g'apertur'es of the strips 11 and 6, and through the slots 15 and 10 of theparts 14 and 9," respectively, whereby the dividing board or gate may be locked at various angular positions. The upper end of the latclrbolt-16 is preferably headed, for convenience in'handling the same.

Means is provided for locking the latch bolt in'position, and to this end, the free end of the strip or leaf 14 is bent angularly upward, as at 17, and has hinged thereto, a hasp 18 provided with the slot 19 adapted to swing over 'a keeper 20 carried by basal or butt end portion of the strip or leaf 14, whereby a shackle lock, or the like, may be engaged through the keeper 20 to lock the hasp 18 over-the latch bolt 16, whereby the latch bolt may not be withdrawn by malieious or unwarranted persons.

' In practice, the latch mechanism may be readily applied to the dividing box, and to a either side of various dividing boxes, ac-

cording to the position of the dividing boards or gates. l Vhen the hasp 18 is swung Iopenorupward, the latch bolt 16 may readilybe withdrawn" upwardly, so that the dividing board or gate may be swung to the position desired, the slots 15 and 10 of the .parts 14 and 9 carried by the free end of the "gate, successively registering with the aper- ' tures 13 and 7 of the strips 11 and 6, whereby when the'gate has been properly positioned, thelatch bolt may be dropped through the proper aperture 13, to engage through the slot 15, the lower alining aperjtur'e 7, and the slot 10. In this manner, the gate ls-loeked agamst swinging movement,

and by swinging the hasp 18 over the keeper 20, and locking the hasp in posi- 'tion, as aboveintimated, the gate or dividking board cannot be reset by unauthorized or malicious persons. The water may thus be properly diverted from the main into I the lateral or, the gate or dividing board may be closed, to prevent the flow of water into the 'lateral.

The advantages of a device of the present character will be obvious to those versed in the art, without further comment, it being observed that the objects aimed at have been carried out satisfactorily by the provision of the latch device above described.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a dividing box,

and a hinged dividing board therein, of a transverse strip disposed between the sides of the dividing box adjoining the free end of the dividing board, a member carried by the free end of the dividing board and cooperable with the said strip, and locking means engageable with the said strip at various points along its length and with the said member.

2. The combination with a dividing box, and a hinged dividing board therein, of a transverse apertured strip disposed within the dividing box adjoinin the free end of the dividing board, a member secured to the free end of the dividing board and having a protruding slotted portion cooperating with the said strip, and a locking member insertible through the apertures of the said strip and the slot of the said member.

8. The combination with a dividing box, and a hinged dividing board therein, of an apertured strip attached to one side of the dividing box and extending transversely adjoining the free end of the dividin board, a member carried by the free end of the dividing board and eooperable with the said strip, a latch bolt insertible through the said strip and member, and means carried by the dividing board and arranged to be locked over the latch bolt to prevent its withdrawal.

The combination with a dividing box, and a dividing board therein, of a transverse apertured strip supported within the dividing box at the free end of the dividing board, a strip attached to the free end of the dividing board and projecting therefrom, the projecting portion of the second mentioned strip having a slot cooperating with the apertures of the first mentioned strip, a latch bolt insertible through the said strips, a hasp hinged to the free end of the second mentioned strip and adapted to swing over the latch bolt, and a keeper carried by the dividing board for cooperation with the hasp.
