Be it known that 1, Isaac L. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented new and use- .ful Improvements in Car-Door Locks,,of
which thecfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to car door locks, and embodies amongother features-an adjustable locking bar arranged within the lock casing, to engage a locking element carried by the bar when the latter is inserted within the casing, the said element effecting a release of means employed to normally maintain the bar elevated, with a view of permitting the bar to gravitate intoactive association with the element.
Another object of importance resides in the provisionof means for-obstructing the path of movement of the locking bar from anactive to an inactive position, saidv means being of a character to necessitate the use of a key to render said means inactive almost instantaneously with the elevation of the locking bar to its inactive position through the instrumentality of the key. a
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following; description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the ,invention residing in the construction and ar rangement of parts as claimed.
In @the drawings forming part of thi specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein I Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section- Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view taken on linedt; of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in detail A indicates the side of a car and B the door which'is mounted for sliding movement. The side of the car A is rabbeted to receive a. casing 10 within which is arranged the locking mechanismlfor the door. The casing is provided with a cover 11 which lies flush with the outer'side of the door, while the casing is provided with an opening in the side adjacent the jambyfor the door, through which the locking element .12 carried by the door enters thecasing when the door=1smoved to its closed position.
The locklng mechanism embodles a substantially flat bar 13 arranged within the casing for vertical sliding movement, and is provided with an elongated slot 14 through whicha pin 15 extends to limit the movementof the bar inone direction. The pin 15 rises from the bottom of the casing and has its opposite end secured to a reinforcing member 16 extending transversely of the casing and secured to the opposite sides thereof.
.Pivoted upon the bottom of the casing and at each side of the bar 13 are levers 18, the free extremities of each of which are connected together by a link 19 which ex tends ,across the bar 13. Secured to each side wall, of the casing are springs 20 each of which has one end bearing against the adjacent lever 18 to hold these parts normallyin afixed position relative to the bar 1.3. lnthis fixed position one of the levers 18;engages ashoulder 21 on the bar 13, defined by notching said bar, for the purpose of holding the bar in its elevated position. Whenthus elevated the locking pin 22 projecting from the bar 13 is arranged out of the path of movement of the locking element 12 carried by the door, so that this element can pass freely into the casing when the. door is closed.
In practice, with the bar 13 held in its elevated position in the manner just ,described, the dooris moved to its closedposition, whereuponthe locking element 12 enters the casing 10. The locking element passes above and across the bar 13 until it abuts the lever 18 onthat side of the bar 13. Upon further movement of the door to its full. closed. position thislever is rocked upon its "pivot assisted by its associated spring 20 thus imparting a movement to the lever -18 at the opposite side of the bar 13 tothe link connection 19. As this latter mentioned leverlS is operated, the same is moved out of engagement from the bar 13 at which timethe' latter is forced under the influence of the spring 30 to its active position, whereupon the locking pin 22 enters a notch in the locking element 12, thus prohibiting the opening of the door until the bar 13 is elevated as will be readily understood. When the bar 13 is lowered into active position, a block 25 which is freely pivoted within the casing is forced by the spring 25 to assume a true vertical position above the upper end of the bar 13, and by being disposed in the path of movement of the bar, it is manifest that the latter cannot be elevated until the block 23 has been moved to one side. I
For this purpose I provide a lever 26 which is pivotally mounted upon the pin 15 at a point approximately midway of its length, with the upper end of the lever projecting beyond the corresponding extremity of the bar 13 overlying the block 25. The opposite end of the lever 26 is positioned immediately at the rear of the key-hole slot 27 provided in the cover 11 of the casing, and is cut away as at 28 to receive the actuating portion of a key (not shown), so that when the key is turned the lever 26 will be rocked upon its pivot in the proper direction to cause the upper end of the lever to engage a pin 29 projecting from the block 25, with a consequent adjustment of the block to one side of the bar 13. The bar 13 is also provided with a cut away portion 30 which receives the actuating portion of the key immediately subsequent to the adjustment of the block 25 to its inactive position, whereupon by further turning of the key the bar 13 is elevated effecting a release of the look ing element 12, and permitting the door to be adjusted to its opened position.
When the bar 13 is elevated one of the levers 18 is moved by its associated spring 20 to a position to engage beneath the shoulder 21 and thus maintain the bar 13 elevated. It might here be stated however that when the door is moved to its closed position, and the bar 13 released and moved to its active position, the block 25 being freely pivoted, gravitates to its active position above the adjacent end of the bar 13 being aided in such movement by spring 25. Straddling the lever 26 is a substantially Ushaped member 31 which is adapted to limit the adjustment of the lever 26 in opposite directions.
lVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the inventionwill be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative of what is now considered the preferred embodiment of the invention, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
hat is claimed is 1. A car door lock embodying a casing adapted to be secured to the body of the car, a lock mechanism arranged therein and in cluding a key actuated sliding bar, automatic means adapted to engage the bar and hold the latter elevated, a locking element carried by the door to enter the casing when the door is closed, said element effecting a release of said means to permit the bar to assume an active position, means carried by the bar for locking the said element within the casing, and a block freely pivoted within the casing and adapted to gravitate to a position within the path of movement of said bar when the latter is in active position.
2. A car door lock embodying a casing secured to the body of the car, a lock mechanism arranged therein and including a key actuated sliding bar, a locking element carried by the door to enter the casing when the door is closed, and locked therein by said bar, a block freely pivoted in said casing and adapted to gravitate to a position in the path of movement of said bar when the latter assumes an active position, and a key actuated lever operable to adjust the block to an out of the way position to permit the bar to be elevated in effecting a release of said locking element.
3. A car door lock embodying a casing adapted to be secured to the body of the car, a lock mechanism arranged therein and including a sliding bar having a notch therein, a spring pressed dog normally fitted within said notch for holding the bar elevated, a locking element carried by the door to enter the casing when the door is closed, a spring pressed pivoted lever connected with said dog and having one extremity disposed in the path of movement of said element, whereby the latter effects a release of said bar to permit the latter to gravitate to an active position, and means carried by said bar to engage said element to lock the latter within the casing.
