" RYniinsl'iv'g-a'j subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary," residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in knife Sharpeners. I Q
The primary object of this device is to provide acheap and inexpensive means for I mounting sharpening bars and affording a convenient means for applying said bars to the surface to be sharpened.
. With these general objects in view. and others that will appear as the nature ofIthe invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described,
, illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
- perspective view of the device.
showing the knife in 1 position.
and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectionalview through the bar-carrying portion'thereof and illustrating a knife positioned for sharpening, and, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same a different sharpening Referring more in detail to the drawings, the invention primarily consists of a handle 10 provided at oneend with a perforation 11 adapted to receive some of the fingers of the hand of the operator while at the opposite end of the handle a housing 12 isprovided having an opening 13 therethrough positioned longitudinally of the handle 10 and 1 in substantial alinement with a curved "le o h i mn p d m iomhaving .oneend ofeachseated uponthe shoulder 14:. An ad usting screw 16 threaded through a perforation 17 of the housing wallbears against the adjacent one, of the sharpening bars and whereby thesaid barsare retained within the housing.
I The complete operation of the device will be apparent in that the bars 15 adapted for sharpening the knives are formed of extremely hardsteel and are positioned within the opening 13 and retained in the desired angular relations by means of the screw 16, whereupon the cutting edge as 18 of the knife 19 which is desired to be sharpened is placed between "the sharpening bars as best illustrated in Fig. 3, and with the knife edge 18. engagingthe sharpened adjacent edges 20 of the bars, a longitudinal movement being i imparted to theknife and thereby forcing tact therewith, and thus sharpening the knife edge. The handle 10 is adapted to be grasped in the hand and for better retaining the same against turning, one or more of the fingers may be positioned within the longi:
tudinal slot 11 and whereby the sharpening bars may be reciprocated over the edge for the purpose of sharpening the same. i
The bars 15 are preferably provided on each of their longitudinal edges with similar sharpened corner edges 20 so that the said bars are rendered reversible in the positioning housing 12.
While the employment of hardened steel sharpening bars is preferable, it will be its edge between said bar edges and in con understood that other formsof rifles, hones,
or any desired forms of sharpening bars may be readily employed.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the spirit andscope of the invention as claimed.
" What I claim as new is A device of the class described, comprising a handle and a curved shoulder spaced inwardly from one end thereof, a housing substantially rectangular in cross-section mounted upon said handle outwardly of said shoulder upon the same side thereof and having a longitudinal opening therethrough greater than the width of said shoulder inal'inelnent with thesa id shoui the face of adjacent one of in der, sharpening bars having cutting edges said bars.
positioned crossing each other Within than, In testimon. whereof I aflix my signature opening of sa1d housing and Wlth then m: lnpresence 0 two Witnesses.
5 ner ends seated upon said shoulder and W 47 v spaced from the outer Wall of said housing, PAUL R B R an opening through the Wall of said housing \Vitnesses: adjacent to said shoulder, and a set screw Jon. ZETS, threaded in said opening and adapted for STU. BENKOV;
