Be it-known that I, FRANZ Morons, a subject of Austria-Hungary, residing at Wyan- .dotte,---in the county, ofWayne and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and usefulfjImprovements' in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is a; specification.
The invention provides simple: and efficient means for sharpening knives, scissors, cleavers, and kindred edged implements and tools which may bereduced to compact form and adapted to present a maximum amount of cutting edge for sharpening purposes.
The invention consists of opposed elements between which the article to be sharpposition at one side or the other of the remaining blades, the angular spaces between the blades so positioned receiving the tool or implement to be sharpened, said tool being drawn back and forth with its cutting edge in the angle formed between the blades,
' the latter operating to sharpen the tool by removing portions thereof upon opposite sides. 7 7
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the draw ings hereto attached, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a tool embodying the invention, the dotted lines showing one of the blades moved so as to occupy a position at, either side of the remaining blades.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the sharpener.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a knife in position to be sharpened.
' Fig. .4 is a side view showing the manner of using the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The sharpener comprises a plurality of anama. as, rare.
Application filedMarch 6, 1918. Serial No. 220,799.
blades 1 which-may be of any construction or outline. As indicated, opposite end portions of :the Medicare reduced thereby leaving thewintermediate portions prominently disposed for effective operation when in service. The blades are hardened so as to preserve their cutting edges and in practice, such blades will consist of tool steel properly-tempered. Each of the bladesihas a handle 2 at one end' formed by reducing a terminal portion thereof. A pivot fastening 3 connects the blades 1 at one of their ends, thereby admitting of any one of the blades being swung laterally or in a circle so as to occupy a position at one side or the other of the remaining blades, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The longitudinal edges of the blades are square thereby presenting four cutting edges. The angular spaces between the blades may be varied by spreading the free ends of the blades to a greater or less extent thereby enabling every portion of the cutting edges of the blades being brought into operative position for service.
It will be understood from the foregoing, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, that the invention provides, a device 'of the character specified which is extremely simple in construction and effective in operation, and which when not required for immediate service, may be reduced to a compact form for convenience of carrying or storing. It is further noted that any number of blades may be employed in the formation of the device, the drawings illustrating three of such blades. When it is required to use the sharpener, one of the blades is swung laterally, or in a circle so as to occupy an angular position at one side or the other of the remaining blades. This is indicated by the full lines in Fig. l, and by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The knlfe 4, or other tool or implement to be sharpened, is placed in the angular space between the blades when separated with the edge blades pivotally connected at one of their ends and separable at their free ends, any one of the blades being adapted to be moved "laterally or swung a circle so as to occupy a position at one side or the other of the remaining blades.
2. A sharpener of the character specified, comprising a plurality of blades having their end portions reduced, and their inter- -n1ediate portions projecting to provide pronounced cuttingedges, said blades being pivotally connected at one of their ends and adapted to bespread at their free ends either by a lateral movement or by being swung around. in a circle so that the blades Witnesses: i
so moved may occupy a position at one side 01' theother of th remaining. blades, the several blades when folded, occupying a position along the side of one another.
'3'. The herein described sharpener, comprising a "plurality of like blades having their end portions reduced, and their 'inter mediate edge portions projecting With their faces square across to provide four cutting edges, said blades being pivotally connected at one .of'their-lends and free at their opposite ends to be swung laterally or in a circle, so that any one of the blades may occupy a position at one side or thewotherof the FRANZ MoncH i AUGUST'C.
