UNITED-1 STATES PATENT] oFr -cn.
, PA LIN ansen ,AND'IWALTER'E. J. HANSEN; or warrsycanrronum, I
'- A Application filed- January 6, 1923'./. Serial No. 611,026.
To all whom, it may concemw I,
Be it known that we, PAULINE HANSEN and /VALTER E. .J. HANSEN, citizens of the United" States,;.residing .atfWatts, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the fol- 1 lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in knives and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily applied to the digit of a hand and in a manner to be in position for use and at the same time offering no undue hinderance or obstruction to the use of the hand for other purposes.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is particularly adapted to be applied to the thumb of the hand and which is especially designed for use in preparing various kinds of fruits, vegetables and the like for the table or for canning.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved knife whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a knife constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention and in applied position; and
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the knife as illustrated in Figure 1.
As herein disclosed, our improved knife comprises a body plate 1 arcuate in cross section and which has its outer end portion 2 pointed. The inner end portion of the body 1 at opposite sides thereof is provided with the arcuate arms 3 possessing a certain degree of inherent resiliency and which terminate in the upstanding wings 4, said as is clearly illustrated in the.acc0' 1npanywings -being in outward diverging relation" ing. drawings, and which serve to facilitate the application ofthe knife to the digit, such as the thumb,of the hand; One longitudi nal marginal portion of; the body-1 between an arm 3 and the pointed portion 2 is provided with an angular-1y related cutting blade 5 preferably integrally formed therewith. The opposite marginal portion of! the body 1 immediately adjacent to the pointed portion 2 is provided with thecurved resilient arm 6 overlyingthe body 1 and having its inner corner of its free end portion disposed slightly outward as indicated; at 7 to further facilitate the application of the device into working position. As is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, our improved knife is especially designed for use in. connection with the thumb of a hand and when so applied the ball of the thumb is received within the concave face of the body 1 with the arms 3 straddling the thumb from below inwardly of the first knuckle and with the arms 6 overlying the thumb outwardly of.
position and with the blade 5 disposed along the outer side of the'thumb and in which position the blade 5 is in a convenient position for such usage as may be necessary in preparing fruits, vegetables or the like for the table or for canning. It'will also be readily understood that with our improved knife applied only to the thumb, the remaining digits or fingers of the hand are left free and unobstructed for the requisite handling of the articles.
The knife in its entirety is of such size'as to have the pointed portion 2 0f the body to extend beyond the outer end of the thumb so that this end portion can-be usedfor re- .moving eyes or for other purposes desired.
By having the arms 3 and 6 resilient it will be readily understood that the knife in its entirety will adjust itself to thumbs of difierent sizes. 7
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a knife constructed in accordance'with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which'it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do,
not Wish to be'understood as limiting ourselvesto the-precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying, out our invention in practice except ashereinafter claimed.
\Ve claim r p A knife of the class described comprising an elongated body arcuateincross section, one end portion of said body at opposite sides thereof havingarcuately disposed arms terminating in outstanding wings, said Wings being in outward diverging relation, a longitud'i'nal marginal port-ion of the'body outwardlyof one ofi the arrns being-provided jacent to the end thereof remote from the meme armsteingprcivided' with" anin- \vardly curved resilient arm overlying the body and having the inner corner of its free end portion disposed slightly outward.
In testimony whereof We hereunto aflix our signatures;
PAULINE HANSEN. ALTER E. J. HANSEN.
