BLADE SHARPENER Filed July 9. 1928 35 the insertion of the blade.
Patented May 19, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE WILLIAM B. WOOD'WABD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH SHAPIRO, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND BLADE SHABPENER Application filed July 9, 1928.
An object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple and convenient device for sharpening razor blades.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a device which is simple in construction, made of few parts which lend themselves readily to multiple production and can be cheaply produced.
With the foregoing, and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, hereinafter more specifically illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where are shown improvements; but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the impending claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form part of the invention, and wherein like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sharpener;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the same of a flat rectangular metallic box 10, consisting of a top 11 and a bottom 12. The top and bottom members are stamped from any suitable material, and are hingedly connected at 13, so that they may be readily separated for Formed integral with the top and bottom members are inwardly bent portions 15, which serve as sharpening elements.
These inwardly bent portions 15 are so constructed that they slant towards the center of the top and bottom members. The top and bottom members, after having the sharpening elements formed therein, are case hardened so as to properly serve as sharpening memhere. Through the top member 11 is cut an Serial No. 291,357.
elongated opening 17 in which is placed reciprocating member 19, which extends to the outside of the container to form a handle 20, and extends into the container to form a blade carrier 21. Blade carrier is prevented from becoming dislodged by the elongated opening by lugs '22, or any other suitable means.
After a blade has been placed upon the blade carrier, the top and bottom members are secured together by fastening means 23 and the blade is then caused to move to and fro against the sharpening elements.
What I claim is:
1. A blade sharpener comprising a shallow box like container, sharpening elements formed on the longitudinal edges of the top and bottom of the box, said sharpening elements inclined toward the central portion of said top and bottom members of said box, there being an elongated opening in the top of said box, a reciprocating blade carrier slidably secured in said elongated opening, said carrier having means extending through said elongated opening for moving said blade carrier to and fro.
2. In a device of the class described, two rectangular sheets of material, a series of sharpening elements formed integral with said sheets of material, the edges of said sheets of material turned downwardly forming shallow containers, said shallow containers hingedly connected at one edge, there being an elongated opening in one of said shallow containers, a blade carrier slidably secured in said elongated opening.
3. In a blade sharpener, a box like container for entirely inclosing a blade while being sharpened, sharpening elements formed integral with the top and bottom of said container, and means for moving a blade across said sharpening elements, said means com prising a length of metal bent upon itself at the mid portion to form a handle projecting through an elongated opening in the top of the container and the ends of said strip of metal bent to form a U. shaped member. 4. In a blade shapener, comprising a metallie box, having an elongated opening ,in its top, a plurality of spaced apart inwardly projecting sharpening members, said sharpening elements forming a part of the top and bottom of said box, a. reciprocating blade carrier slidably secured in said elongated opening, said carrier having a portion thereof extending through the elongated opening to form a handle for the blade carrier. 7 4
