R. 1/. Adifi 0/ a y We p UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REBECCA VALENCIA. ADELS, F HOUSTON, TEXAS.
CAN-OPENER.
Application filed April 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REBECOA V. ADELs, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in can openers and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for opening round cans of different sizes and also square cans.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed' upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain combination and arrangement of the sevother features of construction and in the eral parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like charactersdenote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the two parts of the device separated.
Fig. 2 shows the device with the parts in one position.
Fig. 3 is a like view with the parts in another position.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
As shown in these views the invention comprises an outer part 1 made in the form of a casing and the inner part 2 slidingly engaging the outer part and having a slot 3 therein which is engaged by a pin 4 carried by the outer part. The outer part has a air of knives 5 formed by extending the si es of said part beyond the ends and curving the edges of said extending parts and roviding the same with cutting edges.
he top edge of said part is also extended as at 6 to form a stop. The inner part is considerably longer than the'outer part and Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 16 192() 1918. Serial no.- 228,198.
is provided with a pointed end 7 which is adapted to be forced through the center of the can top to form a pivot for the cutting knives on the outer part. When the device is used to open round cans the pointed end 7is forced through the center of the can top andthen the device is tilted and one of the cutting knives is forced through the can top adJacent the ed e. By turning the device, using the point Tas a pivot, the can top may be separated from the can. This inner part is provided with a recess 8 which may be used for removing bottle caps. The pointed end of the inner member may also be used as an ice pick and the knives on the outer member may be used for scraping potatoes as one knife may be used for scraping the potato while the other knife will act as a shield to protect the fingers. When the device is used for opening square cans, the knives-straddle the bead of the can.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to. be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:--
A device of the class described comprising an outer member made in the form of a rectangular casing with both ends open and having its side, at one end extended, said extended portions taper with one edge curved and both edges of each extension being sharpened to provide a knife with a straight edge and a curved edge, the top part of the casing being extended to form a stop, said stop being spaced from the straight edges of the knives, an inner member slidably mounted in the casing and having a slot therein, a pin carried by the easing and engaging said slot, at head on said inner member and a point on the other end of said member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
