To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE O. J oRoEN- SEN, a sub ect of the King of Denmark, re-

siding at East Chicago, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Book Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pocket book protectors, and has for its object the provision of a device of the character described comprising a safety lock device detachably securing a pocket book. or similar article within the ocket of a 'arment in order to revent the same from being pockets.

An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character constructed of few parts, cheap to manufacture and reliable in its operation.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.

l Vith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my device, and Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional View of my device secured to the wall of the pocket book, mounted within the pocket of a garment and showing the looking lever in its-locked position.

Proceeding now to the description of the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a longitudinal plate formed of spring metal and having a plurality of openings 2 formed therein providing means whereby the plate may be secured to the wall of a pocket book. The plate 1 is slotted transversely adjacent its upper terminal to provide a struck-out portion 3 extending essentially at right angles to the plate 1 and providing aspring tongue. Disposed upon opposite sides of the slotted portion of the plate are ears 4 formed integrally with the plate 1 and exlost or taken by pick Specification of Letters Patent. tending at right angles thereto. A longitudinal lever 5 is provided with pivots 6 adjacent its inner terminal which are mounted within the ears 4 formed on the plate 1. The-inner terminal of the lever 5 is provided with a reduced portion 7, which is adapted to engage the struck-out portion 3, whereby a spring action is given the lever 5. The lever 5 is bent back upon itself at a point intermediate its ends at a point indicated at e. The free terminal 9 of the lever 5 is adapted .to engage the outer wall 10 of a pocket, designated generally 11, and forces the same through an opening 12 formed centrally of the ends of the plate 1 to hold the pocket book 13 against removal from the pocket.

The plate 1 is secured to the wall 14 of the pocket book by means of a wire 15 extending longitudinally through the pocket book and having its free terminals bent back upon the outer wall 14 and engaging certain of the openings 2 formed in the plate, as indicated in Fig. 3, whereby the plate may be moved relatively to the pocket book to facilitate for its fitting with pockets of different sizes.

lVhenit is desired to lockthe pocket book against removal from the pocket 11, the pocket book 13 with the plate 1 secured thereto is inserted within the pocket, the lever 5 extends downwardly over the outer wall 10 of the pocket, the free terminal 9 of the lever 5 engages the wall 10 of the pocket and the spring action imparted to the lever 5 by the struck-out portion 3 of the plate 1 forces the terminal 9 and the cloth into the opening 12 of the plate 1 and thereby locks the pocket book against re moval from the pocket.

When it is desired to remove the pocket book from the pocket, the lever 5 is moved outwardly against the spring action of the struck-out portion 3 and the free terminal 9 is disengaged from the opening 12, thereby permitting the desired action.

In reduction to practice, I have, found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eiiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may Patented Aug. 18, 1914.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:

1. A pocket book protector, consisting of a plate adapted to be secured to a pocket book, said plate being slotted adjacent its upper terminal, a struck-out portion forma spring tongue disposed adjacent said slot, a lever pivotally mounted upon said plate and engaging said spring tongue, said lever bent back upon itself adjacent its outer terminal and forming a locking tongue, and said plate having a transverse opening centrally of its ends adapted to cooperate, With said locking tongue.

2. A pocket book protector, consisting of a rectangular plate adapted to besecured to a pocket book, a struck-out portion forming a spring tongue adjacent one end of said plate, a lever pivotally mounted on said plate and engaging said spring tongue, said lever bent back upon itself adjacent its outer terminal and forming a locking tongue, said locking tongue being disposed in an angular plane relative to the longitudinal axis of the plate, said plate having a transverse opening therein intermediate its ends, and said locking tongue adapted to extend Within the opening When in locked position.
