BAG FASTENER.
APPLICATION nus!) JUNEI. 1918.

awvemtoz .citizen of the United States, residin 56815 M. ALMEDIA, or snosnonn, mnno.
IBAG-JII-ASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Appligation filed June 7, 1918. Serial No. 238,684.
Z '0 all whom it may cortt crn:
Be it known that I, Jose M. ALMEDIA, a at Shoshone, in the county of Lincolnand tate of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such' as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in looking devices fer bags.
An important object of this invention is to provide a locking device for mail bags and the like comprising an attachment to be secured to the upper portion of the bag, to lock the same securely and prevent access to the bag by unauthorized persons.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a locking device for mail bags and the like comprising a pair of arms adapted to encircle the bag at its upper portion, a centrally disposed rod adapted to extend through alining apertures in the upperportion of the bag, and novel locking means for the arms encircling the bag.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described,
which is highly efficient in use, reliable, of
highly simplified construction and cheap to. manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a locking device embodied in my invention, showing the same applied to a bag and parts thereof being cut away,
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, showing t e device open,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same applied to a bag, and,
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. v
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of -my invention, the numeral 5 designates an approximately semi-circular.
arm having formed integrally .therewith a centrally disposed rod 6, said rod having a reduced end portion 7. A second arm des Patented Dec. 27,1921.
ignated by the numeral 8 and pivotally secured to the first named arm as at 9 is semislot 10 adapted for the reception of the reduced end portion 7 of the rod 6. 'That portion of the arm 8 having the slot 10 therein is increased in thickness and said slot 10 has its walls convexed to provide an en-' circular in shape and is provided with a An apertured ear 14. formed on one side of the arm 5 and disposed centrally thereof is adapted for the reception of a pivot 15 which serves to secure a handle 16 thereto.
As more clearly shown in Fig. 1, a lock formed on one end portion of the arm 5 and designated by the numeral 17 is adapted to.
coact with a locking bar 18 formed on one end of the arm 8. A pivoted pawl 19 arranged within the lock 17 is actuated by a coiled spring 20. The forward end of the pivoted pawl 19 is adapted to normally contact with teeth 21 formed on the outer side of the locking bar 18. The lock 17 is provided with a keyhole 22 adapted for the reception of a key. With reference to Fig. 1, it will be apparent that the key in turning within the keyhole 22, will contact with the rear portion of the pivoted pawl 19, thus disengaging the same from the teeth 21 of the locking bar 18. The rear face of the block 17 may be provided with means for receiving an address card showing the destination. of the mail bag.
In attaching my improved locking device to a bag, it will be apparent that the 'rod 6 is passed through the alining aperpreferred embodiment of my invention, it
is understood that I may make such ninor changes in arrangement and construction of parts, as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of theappended section, and a lock for the frame sections claim. v at the end of one of the sections adapted to Having thus described my invention, bear against a wall. what I claim is: In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 5 A bag' fasterller comprising two hframe in presence of two Witnesses.
