Letters Patent No. 110,579, dated December 27, 18,70.
IMPROVEMENT IN AXLE-SKEINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZOl MAYHEW, of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have vinvented a new and valuable Improvement in Axle-skeins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clean-and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and tp the letters and figures of reference marked thereon Figure]` of the drawing is a representation of a vertical longitudinal section of iny invention.
Figure 2 is aview of the partial skeins. Figure 3 is a detail. The nature of my invent-ion consists in the construction vof' the small ends of' the sections of the skeins with a connecting-tie marked e on the drawing, for the purposevof preventing the wooden axle from protruding too far outward.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing.
A represents the Wooden axle7 and B B the skein.
The skein is made in two pieces of steel or .other tionof three and oue-half inches wide to a four-inch the axle by screws; and sometimesa collar, e, may be' driven down upon the shoulder of the axle.
The small ends of the piece'sli B are connected by. the metal plate or tie c, which is secured to each piece B, and let into a channel, a, cut diametrically across the small end ofthe wooden axle to` receive it.

The metallic partial skeins B B, connect-ed by the tie c, in combination with the wooden axle A, substantially as specified.
