Patented JulyZfl, 159514.
Application filed April 21, 1913. .Sera1No..'72,551.
To all jzowmit may concern.' j Be 1t known that I, JOHN HOHN, a citizen of the United States, vresiding at Baldwin, in'vv the county of Jackson and Statei o'Iowa,
have invented certain new and useful Im?" proveniente in lWrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches and the object of my invention is the provision of a wrench which can be instantly applied and kadjusted to the object, and in which the adjustment may be obtained by the use of one hand and with ease and reliability.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a Wrench which will possess great strength and durability, which will possess merit in point of simplicity of construction and cheapness of production, and which generally, in every particular, will prov thoroughly eiiicient and practical.
With these objects in view, my invention consists of a wrench embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service, substantially as shown, described and particularly defined by the claim.
In order that the construction in detail and the operation or manner of using my wrench may be understood, and its features of merit and advantages be fully appreciated, I invite attention to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure l represents a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention, partly broken away to illustrate detailsv ot construction. Fig. 2 represents an edge view lof ,the wrench with a part broken away to show im# portant details of construction. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the novel form of sliding member employed in my wrench.
In the drawings: The letter A designates the handle of my wrench, formed with the shank B, terminating at one end in a rigid j aw C, and formed at each end between the j aw and handle, with shoulders or abutments D, and upon its shank portion provided With a series of openings E. Upon the shank of the wrench is slidingly mounted the bail or strap-shaped adjustable member F, which is provided with an opening Gin one wall, adapted to register with one of the openings E in the shank, and further provided upon its inner edge with an arm II,- extending .laterally vz tndpproviided with a pair of lugs J, between which is mounted the 'fulcrumgIQ of the lever L, ormed at titsin- `ner end with the `finger-engaging portion M, `and at its other end with the hook M', adapt ed to it in the opening G of the sliding member and to engage one of the openings E in the shank, to retain the said sliding member in proper adjustment upon the shank, to retain the lever in engaged position, I pro vide the spring N, which is disposed between the lugs J, and engages the lever arm. The sliding member thus constructed provides the open portion P, in which is mounted the fulcrum Q, formed with the arm Q, provided at one end with a jaw Q2, and having its inner end :formed with a finger engaging portion Q3, this construction providing an adjustable aw which is also pivoted in the sliding member. Also the finger portions of the lever carrying the jaw and the finger portion of the adjusting lever are arranged side by side, and thus within easy reach of one hand of the user of the wrench, thus enabling the operator to instantly adjust the lever with its jaw to suit the size of the object and at the same time to retain the jaw in proper adjusted position, and to permit the jaw to be tilted or moved as desired. To retain the lever with its jaw in proper place, I provide the coiled spring R, which at one end engages the finger-engaging portion of the lever on its underside, and at its other end bears upon the block S, secured within the bail-shaped sliding member.
In using my wrench the rigid aw on the shank is pressed against one side oi the ob- Aject to be operated upon and the lever o-r movable jaw is brought into proper position by moving the sliding member until the jaw is in engaged position and the sliding member wherein its adjustment retains the two jaws in proper position, in order that the wrench will grip the object and permit such object to be turned in the usual manner.
The advantages of my wrench are its ease of application and detachment, its simplicity, durability and cheapness of production, its compactness and its ease of manipulation and eiiiciency, all of which will be readily understood and appreciated.
I claim:
The wrench herein shown and described, consisting of the shank having a series of alining openings and formed with a jaw, a sleeve slidable on the shank and having an opening adapted to register With one of the series of openings in the shank, the arm formed at one end with a jaw and pivoted in said sleeve and formed at its other end with a finger piece, a spring bearing against said arm adjacent the linger piece, an arm on said sleeve extending from the inner edge thereof and formed With a pair of ears, a lever pivoted between said ears having a 32 hook at one end adapted to pass through the opening of the -sleeve into one of the openings of the shank, a finger piece on the other end of said lever, and a spring for retaining the lever in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
