To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, RUrUs A. SUMMERS, citizen of the United States, residing at Updyke, in the county of Jefferson and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basket-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in frames for temporarily supporting baskets and like receptacles, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a frame preferably formed of wire and having swinging handles of novel construction which may be folded down when not in use to permit the insertion and removal of the basket or other receptacle.

lVith these and other objects in vieW the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device showing the handles in their upper or operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the frame with the handles in their depressed or inoperative position.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved device is designed to tem# porarily support a receptacle, such as a basket, constructed from cheap material, and commonly called chip baskets, which are fragile in their construction and liable to be broken after short usage. The improved holding frame is designed to support such a receptacle and reinforce and strengthen the same and prevent its breakage when in use, and when the cheaply constructed receptacle is worn out it can be replaced by another enabling the supporting frame to be employed for an indefiniteJ number of the baskets or like receptacles.

The improved device may be employed to support receptacles of any required size yor shape, and it is not desired to limit the ,invention in any manner in this respect, but for the purpose of illustration the improved device is shown arranged to support the body portion of an ordinary cheaplyconl cient strength to withstand the strains to p Y which it will be subjected, and conforming in outline to the basket member 10. The member 11 is endless, the ends being soldered or otherwise secured together.

Spaced longitudinally extending loop wires 12 are employed and formed with upturned ends 18 which are united to the frame member 11. Transverse supporting meme bers 14 are also provided and with upturned ends 15 connected to the member 11. Any required number of the members 121l may be employed and are soldered or otherwise united at their crossing points as shown at 16. By this means an open frame is provided which effectually supports the receptacle at relatively short intervals throughout its whole bottom sides and ends. Mounted to swing upon the ends of the lupper frame member 11 are U-shaped loops 17 directed inwardly at their upper sides as shown at 18 to bear over the upper edge of the receptacle, the inwardly directed portion 18 being curved downwardly when the device is in operative position to bear with considerable force over the upper edge of the receptacle, and thus bind the latter within the frame.

Connected to the side portions of the upper frame member 10 are handle supports each comprising vertical portions 19 spaced apart and connected at their lower ends to the member 11 and bent into eyes 20 at their upper ends, the eyes being connected by a longitudinal portion 21 having an inwardly directed loop 22 intermediate the eyes, the loops being designed to bear over the.upper edge of the receptacle 10 and hold the latter from upward movement and thus coact with the terminal holding members 17-18.

The eyes 2O are designed to receive the downwardly folding handle members of the improved device, the handles being arranged to fold downwardly in opposite directions over the ends of the frame as shown in Fig. 2. Each opposite pair of the eyes 20 support one of the handles, and as the handles are precisely alike the description of one will suflice for both. Each handle memberI is formed of two portions of wire `connected together in a novel manner, one handle beI- ing looped at 23 in one of the eyes 2O and thence directed upwardly as shown at 24 and odset laterally at 25 and thence extended horizontally as at 26 and directed downwardly as at 27 and terminating at 28 intermediate the horizontal portion 26 and the opposite eye 2O of the other handle holding member. The other handle section is looped at 29 in the opposite eye 20 and thence extended upwardly as at 30 and provided with a lateral4 offset 31 and thence extended horizontally at 32 and in parallel relation to the horizontal portion 26 of the other handle section, and thence downwardly as shown at 33 and terminates at 34 intermediate the horizontal portion 24 and the eye 20 to which the first-mentioned handle section is connected. The downwardly directed portion 33 is provided with a lateral oset 35 as shown. The downwardly directed portions 24-33 are twisted together as shown at 36, while the downwardly directed portions 27 30 are twisted together as shown at 37, the terminals 28-34 being preferably bent into outwardly directed eyes as shown. By this means an eectual handle is produced, the horizontal portions 26--32 forming a hand grip while the twisted portions 367-37 firmly unite the parts and produce a rigid handle. The relative locations of the eyes 20 and the loops 23-29 of the handle are so gaged that when the handles are folded downwardly toward the ends of the receptacle they bear over the ends of the frame as shown in Fig. 2, and are out of the way while'the receptacle is being filled or emptied. The handles are thus disposed also when the receptacle is to be removed from the fra-me..

When the receptacle is to be inserted the handles are turned downwardly as shown in Fig. 2 and the receptacle forced into place, the inwardly directed loop portions 22 of the handle holders being forced outwardly to permit the insertion of the receptacle and thence moved inwardly over the receptacle to hold it in position. When the basket is inserted the end supports 17-18 are also turned outwardly until the receptacle is ing nection with the supporting frame as will be obvious.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A bail device comprising coacting body members with the intermediate portions eX- tending in parallel relation and each with downturned terminals of unequal length, the longer terminals having basket engaging eyes and the shorter terminals entwisted with the longer terminals.

2. A bail device comprising coacting body members with the intermediate portions extending in parallel relation and each with a relatively long and a relatively short downturned terminal, the longer terminals adapted to be engaged with a receptacle holder and the shorter terminals adapted to be engaged with the longer terminals.

3. In a device of the class described, a receptacle receiver including an oblong frame, bail supports connected to said frame and extending in parallel relations to its side members and each having eyes spaced apart, said bail supports being directed inwardly between the eyes to form yieldable devicesv to engage over a receptacle when the same is disposed in the receiver, and bail devices swingingly engaging the eyes of the bail supports.
