Description

OARLISLE B. HOLDING, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
HANDLE FOR MATTRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Application filed November 26, 1906. Serial No. 345,148.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLIsLE B. HOLDING, a.citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and use ful Handle for Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ccompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion.
My invention relates particularly to handles for use on mattresses or the like, and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap and eflicient article of the kind, which is adapted to be easily and quickly attached to or disengaged from a mattress, and when attached to facilitate the lifting thereof.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a pers ective view of a portion of a mattress wlth the handle comprising my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle removed from the mattress, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of one of the securing pins, with its bifurcated end partly spread.
Referring to the drawings, 1 1 designate straps of leather, sheet-metal or other suitable flexible material which are of greater length than the'thickness of a mattress 2 to which they are adapted to be attached to enable their ends to overlap the opposite surface edges thereof as shown in Fig. 1. These straps are connected intermediate their ends by a third strap member 3, which serves a hand-hold, and is riveted or otherwise suit ably attached thereto, as at 4. The ends of the straps 1 1 are provided with slots or apertures 5 for the reception of retaining pins 6. These ins are of sufiicient length to pass entirely t rough a mattress so as to engage both ends of a strap, and have their pointed ends bifurcated, as at 7, to adapt them to be spread apart. to prevent a withdrawal thereof. It is thus apparent that my handle may be easily and quickly attached to a mattress by simply folding the ends of the straps l 1 over the contiguous opposite side edges thereof, inserting the two ins 6 through the alining apertures 5 of t e strap ends and the 1. The combination with a mattress of a handle detachably secured thereto and com prising two strap members, a member connecting said strap members intermediate their ends, and means for securing the strap ends to the mattress-body.
2. The combination with a mattress of a handle therefor comprising two flexible strap members having apertured ends bent to engage 'the opposing surfaces of the mattress, a member connecting said straps to form a hand-hold, and pins passed through the mat tress and opposite .apertured ends of the straps and clenched to prevent an accidental removal thereof.
3. A lifter for a mattress consisting of two members having their ends adapted to be removably attached to a mattress and joined intermediate their ends by a hand-hold.
4. The combination with a mattress of a lifter consisting of two members having aper tured ends and oined mtermediate their ends by a hand-hold and double-pointed pins for passing through the mattress and opposite ends of the members, said pins having their points spread to prevent an accidental removal thereof.
5. The c(,)m bination with a mattress and a lifter therefor having its ends embracing opposite sides of the mattress, of a pin passed through the mattress and coacting with the lifter ends to retain them to the mattress.
6. The combination with a mattress of a signed my name ,to this specification in the presence of twosnbscribing witnesses.
