Description

E. F. HULBERT. PAGKAGE HANDLE. APPLIUATION FILED AUG. 1s, 190s.
Patented July 6, 1909i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN F. HULBERT, OF KENOSHA, WISCONSIN.
PACKAGE-HANDLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. IIULBERT, citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The resent invention rel ates to improvements 1n handles such as are commonly em*- ployed in connection with receptacles and the like to admit of a secure grip or hold being obtained thereon when moving the saine.
rIhe obj ect of the invention is the provision of a durable and inexpensive handle which can be readily applied to a pail or like receptacle and which will not cut or pinch the hands of the operator. l
With this object in view the invention resides essentially in the construction of a handle which embodies a body portion connected at its ends to the receptacle by means of links, the said links also engaging a tie memb er extending longitudinally of the body portion and designed to withstand the weight of the receptacle should the body portion break.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the handle applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the handle on an enlarged scale. the body portion being shown in section and the end inks being extended outwardly in alinement with the body portion. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the handle with the end links extended outwardly into alinement with the body portion, and, Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through the central portion of the handle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention the numeral l designates the body portion of the handle which has a rounded cross section to admit of a secure grip being taken thereon without danger of pinching or cutting the hands. As shown on the drawing the body portion l is formed from a piece of sheet material the longitudinal edges of which are returned Specification of Letters Patent.

upon themselves and soldered or otherwise rigidly connected at 2. It will thus be obvious that the body portion 1 has a hollow formation and arranged within the hollow portion of the body and extending longitudinally therethrough is a tie member 3. This tie member 3 may be in the nature of a chain the extremities of which are connected to the end links 4l by means of which the body portion 1 is attached to the pail or receptacle in connection with which the handle is to be employed. iThe end links 4 may also be in the nature of chains, one of the extremities of each of the end links being looped through a staple 5 or similar member upon the receptacle while the opposite extremity is looped through an opening 6 in the correspending end of the body portion l and also through one of the ends of the tie member 3L It will thus be obvious that the body portion 1 serves to protect the hand from contact with the chains and admits ol" a secure grip being obtained upon the handle without danger of injury to the hands. However, should this body portion become broken the end links l will still be connected by the tie member 3 and a hand loop will still remain for moving the receptacle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A handle comprising a body portion, a tie member extending along the body portion, and end links connected both to the body portion and tie member.
2. A handle comprising a body portion having a hollow formation, a tie member received within the hollow portion of the body and extending longitudinally therethrough, and end links connected both to the body portion and the tie member.
3.,.A handle comprising a body portion having a hollow formation and provided at its ends with eyes, a chain extending longitudinally through the opening of the body portion, and end links formed of chains the links of which are looped both through the eyes of the body portion and the links of the chain extending longitudinally through the body portion.
In testimony whereof I ai'lix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
