Description

J. P. H. LANE.
FOLDING BASKET CARRIER. APPLIGATION.IILBD DEC. 12, 1913.

FIG. 5
IHVENTOR JOHN P HLAHE BY M Aflorruey JOHN P. H. LANE, OF HARRIMAN, TENNESSEE.
FOLDING BASKET-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 12, 1913.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Serial No. 806,283.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. H. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harriman, in the county of Roane and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Basket- Garriers, of which the following is a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention comprehends new and useful improvements in detachable folding basket carriers consisting of a skeleton folding frame and I declare the following to be a full and clear description of the invention, as illustrated by the drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view of the basket carrier frame, having a basket inserted locked within, and the handles attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the skeleton carrier frame showing the locking device released, raised above the handle at one end, and in a position to receive the basket. Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, are plan view and side elevation of the basket carrier when folded. Figs. 5 and 6, respectively, are plan view and side elevation of one of the handles. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the pivoting securer member which provides the handle connections and locking device.
The prime object of this invention is the production of a light weight folding basket carrier constructed of metal or other suitable material, having handles formed oval to fit the hands so it can be carried with comfort, and within which carrying frame the basket can be inserted securely locked, greatly strengthened, and render long service at a small cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a basket carrier frame that can be folded into very small space when not in use, or for convenience and economy in shipping.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of a novel constructed folding basket carrier as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Numeral 1 designates the carrying handles, made preferably of hoop metal rolled oval in shape to fit the hands and add strength and stiffness to the handles which are formed to fold down over the ends of the basket, the lower ends of the handles being flat and provided with pivoting holes 2. There is also provided a plurality of transversely extending straps 3 and longitudinally extending strips 4: all of which are pivotally connected at their ends to the portions 6 and a right angularly bent finger 7. This securer member is for pivoting and binding purposes.
By referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 it will be seen that the longitudinal side strips 4, the handles 1, and transversely extending straps 3 are all pivotally mounted at their ends and securely held together upon the bent portion 6 of the securer members 5. It will be observed, also, that the bent portion 6 is of suificient length to extend through the parts above referred to and allow the finger 7 to pass over and inclose the basket rim 1n a binding manner as shown in Fig. 1. There is also provided longitudinally ex tending locking members 8 pivotally mounted on the inner bottom art of the straps 3 by means of rivets 9. he locking members are formed to fit and extend to and part way up the ends of the basket. The upper ends of the members 8 are bent in hook shape 10 and adapted to fold within the carrying straps 3 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that this basket carrier can be constructed of metal strips, wire, or other suitable material, and may vary in its proportions and size, without departing from the scope of my invention, which, for storing and shipping purposes, can be folded together in small space, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4:.
In applying my invention to baskets, the carrier is unfolded to the open position (see Fig. 2), the handles 1 and securer members 5 being raised to the vertical position. The basket, without handles, can then be placed within the carrier, after which the securer members 5 can be passed over the handles and down over the ends of the basket and locked into the hooks 10. It will also be observed that by this same downward move ment of securer members 5 the finger binders 7 pass over and within the basket rim, and by these combinations the basket is greatly strengthened, and securely held Within the carrier, shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention What I claim is 1. A folding basket carrier of the class described comprising, oval shaped metalcarrying handles, longitudinally extending side strips pivotally attached to the ends of said handles, transversely extending carrying straps pivotally connected to, and carried by said handles, longitudinally extending locking strips pivotally mounted on the bottom of the transversely extending carrying straps provided with hook shape portions at the upper ends thereof, and means adapted to connect Within said hooks for holding the carrier frame and basket in a locked position, substantially as described.
2. A folding basket carrier of the class described comprising oval shaped metal carrying handles, longitudinally extending side straps attached to the ends of said handles,
transversely extending carrying straps connected at their ends to said handles, locking strips provided with hook ends mounted on the bottom of the transverse carrying straps, a plurality of bent Wire securer members transversely extending across the carrier frame, and provided at the ends With bent angular portions adapted to pivotally e11- gage the ends of the handles, transversely extending straps, and longitudinally extending strips securely holding the said parts in a hinged position at their intersecting corners; the said Wire securer members being adapted to fold downwardly and engage Within the locking hooks, substantially as shown and ifior the purpose specified and set forth.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
