Be it known that 1, JOHN P. H. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harriman, in the county of Roane and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable lBa-sket- Frames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to detachable basket frames, and has for its object the production of an cificient means which is adapted to carry a basket from place to place.

Another object of this invention is the production of a frame which is provided with detachable lids which are adapted to fit on the upper portion of the frame so as to entirely inclose and protect the contents of the basket.

Another object of this invention is the pro-duct-ipn of a frame which may be made of a light metal or other suitable material which will greatly strengthen the basket and will hold the same in its correct position for a considerable period.

With these and other objects in view, thisinvention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame, having lids, attached to the basket. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the detachable frame. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bridge men ber. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the lids used in combination with the bridge member. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the detachable frame showing the bridge member attached thereto. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a portion of the basket and one of the lids showing the latch means used therewith. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the latch member in an unlocked position. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of a portion of the frame showing one of the securcr members used with the bridge. Fig. 9 is a section of a portion of the frame showing a portion of Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a portion of the sliding handle. Fig. 11 is a sectional view of a portion of the sliding handle.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the device consists of a rectangular rim 1 to which is attached the end portion of the longitudinally extending strips 2. There are also provided a plurality of transversely extending strips 3 which are connected to the side portions of t-herim 1 by means of the rivets 4. These rivets 4 also act as pivot means for the handles 5 which areadapted to carry the frame from place to place. It will be seen that by constructing the frame in this manner, a basket of the ordinary construction may be easily placed therein and since the strips would brace the same on all sides, it would greatly prolong the life of the hasket. There is also provided a bridge memher which consists of the elongated body 6 in which the longitudinally extending slots 7 and 8 are formed. The outer portions or ends 9 of the bridge (5 are bent downwardly and at right angles thereto. One of the end portions 9 is provided with a securer 10 which is held in position by means of the rivets 11. The ends of this securer 10 are each provided with a finger 12 and lip 13. The other bent portion 9 is provided with a securer 10 which is pivotally mounted to this end by means of the pivot member 14. Each end of this securer member 10' is provided with a hook portion 15 and a bent portion 16. \Vhen this bridge is used as illustrated in Fig. 5, the sccurer 10 is first placed behind the transversely extending strips 3 and the lips 13 will rest upon the outer portion of these strips. The bridge (5 is then placed transversely upon the upper portion of the frame at which time the pivoted secnrer 10 is placed in position by placing the hook portions 15 behind the strips 3 and the bent members 16 upon the outer side thereof. In this manner the bridge will be held in position and it will be seen that it will constitute a very efficient brace for the central portion of the frame. It will further be seen that the upper edges of the securers 10 and 10' will rest upon the under edge of the rim 1 whereby the bridge will be held in its correct position.

In order to close the top of the basket, there is provided a plurality of lids which comprise the rectangular body portions 17 which carry at their inner ends the hinge members 18. These hinge members 18 terminate in the curved portions 19 which are adapted to be placed within the longitudt nally extending slots 7 and 8 of the bridge members 6, and in this manner the lids may be raised or lowered when so desired. Each lid carries a strip 20 which terminates in the depending portion 21 to which the substantially V-shaped catch 22 is pivotally connected by means of the pivot member 23.

By referring to Figs. 6 and 7, it will be seen that the inner portion of the V-shaped catch will rest behind the rim 1 and a portion of the basket whereby the lid will be securely held in position upon the upper portion of the frame. \Vhen it is desired to raise the lid, the V-shaped catch is swung to one side of the depending portion 21, as illustrated in Fig. 7, at which time the depending portion 21 may be bent outward since the same is construtced of a strip of spring metal and the lid may be easily raised.

By referring to Figs. 5, l0 and 11, it will be seen that the rim 1 may be provided with a sliding handle 24 which is pivotally mounted upon the rivet 25. The rim 1 carries a band member 26 which entirely encircles the same and is provided with the off-set portion 27 whereby the end portions of the handle 24 maybe placed upon the rivet 25 and held in an operable position. It will be seen that by use of this sliding handle, the frame may be made of a considerable length for the purpose of accommodating baskets which are provided with comparatively long bodies, such as clothes baskets, at which time the handle may be movedtoward the inner portion of the frame for carrying the same. When, however, it is desired to pack a number of these baskets, one upon the other, the handle may he slid toward the end portions of the frame at which time they may be moved doWn so as to extend over the end portions thereof.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that baskets which are made of thin wooden strips or paper fiber may be placed within the frame at which time the bridge may be placed in position upon the top portion thereof and the lids may also be placed in position and looked upon the upper portion or the frame. After this has been ac- I complished, the handles may be also moved down so as to extend upon the end port-ions of the frame whereby one basket may be set upon the other so as to occupy comparatively small spaces.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. A detachable basket frame of the class described comprisinga rectangular rim, longitudinally extending strips secured to said rim at their end portions, transversely extending strips carried by said rim in the end portions thereof, and pivotally mounted handles carried by said rim, a bridge mem- ..h olding said bridges in position, said ber carried by the central portion of said rim and extending transversely thereof, securer members carried by the depending portions of said bridge, one of said securer members provided with a plurality of fingers adapted to rest behind said transversely extending strips and provided with a plurality of lips adapted to rest upon the outside of said transversely extending strips for holding the same in its correct position, the other of said securer members provided with a hookportion adapted to rest behind said transversely extending strips and provided with a plurality of bent portions adapted to rest upon the outside of said strips, the upper portion of said securer members resting upon the edge portions of said rim whereby the bridge will be held securely in position, said bridge provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending slots, a plurality of lids provided with hinged members terminating in curved portions adapted to rest within said longitudinally extending slots for hingedly securing said lids to said bridge, said lid adapted to form a closure for the upper portion of said frame for entirely inclosing the basket carried therein, and means carried by said lid j for holding the same in a locked position.
