Description

C. E. GUNN.
DOOR HANGER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. a, 1913.
1,100,826. Patented June 23,191 1 I awe whom Char LesE. G unn UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. GUNN, OF PLATTSBURG, MISSOURI.
D0 ORFHAN GER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. GUNN, a citizen or" the United States, residing at Plattsburg, in the cOunty of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to supporting means for box car doors and the like, and the principal object of the same is the production of a hollow track-way which is provided with an opening for allowing the doors to be removed when desired, this opening being normally closed for holding the doors in their correct position.
With this and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the box car showing the door hanger carried thereby. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the hollow track-way and support therefor. Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 3"?) of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the hanger brackets showing the same attached to a door.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals 1 indicates the usual box car which carries the supporting beam 2. The hollow track 3 is fixedly secured to this supporting beam 2 and is provided upon its under side with a longitudinally extending slot 4. This hollow track 3 is preferably formed round, but may be formed of any other shape desired. The doors 5 are held in position by the hanger brackets. Each bracket comprises a finger 6 which is held in position by means of the plates 7, these plates 7 being provided with depending lower portions 8 straddling the door 5 and being fixedly secured thereto. A roller 9 is carried by each one of the brackets and is adapted to ride within the hollow track 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

while the finger 6 will extend through the slot 4 and in this manner allow the door to be held in position so as to slide freely. In order to allow the doors to be removed when desired the hollow track 3 is provided at its central portion with an opening 10. As a door is moved up toward the opening it will move until the forward roller will pass out and downwardly through the opening 10. The door may be moved until the rear roller carried by the hanger is moved out through the opening 10 at which time the door is free from engagement with the track 3. In this manner it will be seen that whenever it is desired to remove a door or hanger by passing the rollers out through the opening 10, the door may be easily removed. When, however, it is desired to retain the doors in their correct position, the opening 10 is closed by a screw plug 11 having a reduced threaded end 12. This reduced threaded end 12 is threaded into engagement with the inner portion of the track 3, as indicated at 13. This screw plug 11 may be easily removed by using a suitable instrument, by fitting this instrument within the groove 14, and rotating the same.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple and eflicient door hanger has been produced for holding doors in such position as to allow the same to be easily moved and which is provided with a simple means for allowing the door to be attached from the hollow track when desired.
Having thus described the invention, whatis claimed as new, is:-
A door hanger comprising a support, a hollow track carried thereby, said hollow track provided upon its lower portion with a longitudinally extending slot, said trackalso provided intermediate its ends with an enlarged opening in the path of said slot, doors provided with hangers carried by said slot, said hangers adapted to pass through said slot and ride within said track, said hangers adapted to be removed from said track by passing out through the enlarged opening formed in said track, said track provided with a threaded opening formed in alinement with said enlarged opening, a In testimony whereof I affix my signature screw plug poslitioned lwithin said enlarged in presence of two witnesses.
openin for c osing t 1e same said screw 1 T plug piovided with a reduced t hreaded end CHARLES GU1\N' 5 fitting in the threaded opening formed in Vitnesses:
said track, said screw plug adapted to nor- S. F. Bieenns'nirn,
nially hold said hangers within said track. CLAUDE GUNN.
