noon-HANGER..
SPECIFICATION rowing par@ of Letters Patent No. 629,165, dated :my 1s, ieee. Y
Application filed March 23, 1899.
To all whom :It may concern: f
Beit known that I, FREDERICK LARsoN, of Chelsea, county of Middlesex, State of Massaehusetts, have invented an Improvement in Door-Hangings, of which the following del scription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a'specication, like letters-on the drawings representing likeparts.
This invention has for its object to hang in a novel manner sliding doors, provision being made to adjust the door as may be required.
My-'nvention is more especially devised for hanging sliding doors in bookcases, cabinets, pantries, dre., where one door or sash is to slide past another; but my inventionA is not limited to such use, as it may be employed in any other position desired without'departing from my invention.
Figure l, in broken detail, shows one door improved hangers on my improvedv rollerirame. Fig. 2 is a partial section through the roller-frame, both doors being pushed fully to one side of the line of section to show their edges, said figure also showing apart, say, of the header of a bookcase. Fig. 3 isa broken-out side elevation of one of the hangers. Fig. 4 is a view of the hanger shown in Fig. 3, looking at it from the right. lFig` 5 shows the toothed plate in two positions. My invention is especially designed to support sliding doors and sashes, as stated, for bookcases, pantries, cabinets, dac., where doors and sashes are made to slide one past the other to gain access to the interior of the space closed by the door or. sash. For this purpose I have devised a special roller-frame, it in practice being fitted into the interior of the cabinet, bookcase, or `other place where it is to be used. This rollerframe is composed, preferably, of connected side pieces a c, each having a track, as ct' c,the said side pieces being herein represented as composed of wood and united together at their upper ends by a strip b, shown as tongue-and-grooved. The side pieces and strip b make a roller-frame. At the interiorof this roller-frame I apply a center piece d, having at its opposite `edges suitable tracks, (see Fig. 2,) which stand norat the level of the tracks ci c. This center piece is represented as divided at d' Serial No. 71,164. (No model.) i
(see Fig. l) diagonally in the direction of its length, and said divided diagonal ends are.
united together and to the strip b by a suitable screw, as d2, and other suitable screws cl3 maybe used at any point in the length of the center piece to thereby conne the center piece properly with relation to the rollen.
frame. As herein shown, the strip b is provided with a groove to receive the narrower l edge of the center piece. i (See Fig. 2.)
e represents a door or sash and e2 a second door or sash. Each door has a suitable hanger, and each hanger has suitable rollers, to be described, which run upon the tracks of the rollerv frame. Each door or sash at its vertical edge, near its upper end, has attached to it by a suitable screw, as f, a toothed plate f',
said plate having a suitable elongated slot or opening f2 to receive a screw f3, said screw being extended through an elongated slot g in an angle-iron g', forming the base of the hanger, said angle-iron having rising from it a suitable ear g2, which sustains a suitable axle g3, said axle receiving upon it at each side of said ear a roller, as g4 g5. These rollers run on the tracks referred to, one roller vrunning on one track of each of said side pieces c, while the other two rollers run on the twotracks carried by the center piece. The angle-iron has at its depending lower end a series of teeth, as g5, which engage the teeth fief the toothed plate f The inner horizontal ends of the angle-irons are secured to the upper edge of the top by suitable screws h. (Represented in Fig. l, where the door or sash is shown as broken out.)
The diameter of the rolls is but little short of the distance from the surface of the tracks on which they run and the upper edge h' of the space within which the rollers travel, so that there will be no jumping up and down of the rollers on the track.
4To position the door or sash exactly with relation to the roller-frame, the screw f3 may be loosened 'and the angle-iron be raised or lowered with relation to the door at its top, the slot g permitting such movement, and the teeth glof the angle-ironk may be made to reengage the teethof the toothed plate fand Vthe screw f3 to be again turned into place.
IOO
the lower end of the door or sash may be adapted to always clear as m uch as desired the woodwork of the cabinet, bookcase, or chinacloset where the door or sash is used, and in this way the door or sash may always be held in condition to be easily and readily moved Over the track, and it cannot bind anywhere.
Having described my invention, what I Claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters witha roller-han ger made as an angle-bar carrying a roller, said bar being adapted to be fitted and secured to theedge and top of a door, one end of said bar being provided with teeth to engage the teeth of said slotted plate, said angle-bar having a slot to receive the adjusting-screw used `to confine the toothed end of said bar in engagement With the teeth ot the slotted plate, substantially as described.
5. A roller-frame consisting of side pieces provided With inturned tracks, and a detachable center piece having outturned tracks to thereby provide a plurality of Ways, combined With a plurality of doors or sashes, each having a plurality of rollers running on each pair of tracks of the said roller-frame to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I haye signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
FRED. LARSON.
