Description

United States Patent O DRAWER SLIDE Roy A. Nelson, Chatham Township, Morris County, N. J.
Application April 26, 1956, Serial No. 580,734
2 Claims. (Cl. S12-341) This invention relates to cabinets, as used in kitchens and the like, and in particular a mounting for drawers of cabinets wherein channel bars on the sides of a drawer are positioned to travel over pairs of rollers rotatably mounted at the sides of the drawer opening in the front wall of a cabinet wherein the drawer travels on roller bearings and wherein the channel bars are provided with stops limiting outward movement of the drawer and also with openings permitting removal of said drawer by tilting the outer end of the drawer upwardly.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a drawer mounting for kitchen cabinets and the like in which the drawer may be actuated to an extended position and also to a closed position with ease.
Various types of installations have been provided where drawers are slidably mounted in cabinets, however, it is diicult to provide a slide for a drawer that permits freedom of movement without too much side play and with means for limiting outward movement of the drawer.
With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an improved drawer mounting wherein brackets having a plurality of rollers extended therefrom are mounted on the inner surface of the front wall of a cabinet and tracks, channel-shaped in cross section, are mounted on sides of the drawer wherein the channel-shaped tracks are free to travel over the rollers of the bracket in opening and closing movements of the drawer.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved mounting for drawers of cabinets and the like, in which the mounting is fastened to and solely upon the inner surface of the front wall of the cabinet, side mounting strips or back mounting provisions being unnecessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved drawer mounting for drawers of cabinets and the like, in which the lateral movement of the drawer can be adjusted to allow for variations in the drawer width in relation to the cabinet opening.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved drawer mounting for drawers of cabinets and the like in which the drawer travels with a free movement continuously and in which means is provided for limiting outward movement of the drawer.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved mounting for drawers of cabinets and the like in which the mounting is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a pair of brackets having anges extended from one end of each bracket providing means for mounting the brackets in the front wall of a cabinet with screws or the like, a pair of rollers rotatably mounted on opposed surfaces of the brackets, and tracks, channel-shaped in cross section, positioned on sides of a drawer and mounted with the tracks extended over the rollers whereby the drawer is free to travel outwardly and inwardly with rolling actions of the rollers in the tracks.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional plan through a cabinet illustrating the improved drawer slide or mounting and showing a drawer therein in the partly open position.
Figure 2 is a View looking toward the outer surface of one of the drawer mounting brackets with the parts shown on an enlarged scale, showing the rollers thereon and showing the bracket mounted on a front wall or stile of a cabinet.
Figure 3 is a view similar to that shown in Figure 2 looking toward the opposite side of the bracket.
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the: bracket looking toward the small end thereof.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view showing a portion of a drawer with the roller receiving track on the side thereof and showing rollers of one of the brackets positioned in the track.
Figure 6 is a view similar to that shown in Figure 5 showing the drawer tilted to facilitate removing of the drawer from the rollers.
Figure 7 is a cross section through an extended end of one of the brackets taken on line `7 7 of Figure 2 showing the roller at the end of the bracket positioned in a channel-bar or track of a drawer, the drawer and other parts of the cabinet being omitted.
Figure 8 is a perspective view showing the stop and also the opening at the end of one of the tracks or chan* nel-bars with the opposite end of the bar broken away.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved drawer slide or mounting of this invention includes brackets 10 and 1l mounted on the inner surface of a r front wall 12. of a cabinet i3, with rollers 14 and 15 of the bracket lil extended into a rail of a track or channel-bar 16 and with rollers 17 and 18 of the bracket 11 extended into a similar rail 19 on the opposite side of a drawer 2t?.
As illustrated in Figure 2 each of the brackets includes a web 21 with upper and lower flanges 22 and 23, a base 24 having openings for screws 25 and 26 therein and flanges 2'7 and 2S, the flanges also having openings for screws, such as the screws Z9 and 30 therein.
The rollers 14 and 15 of the bracket 10 are mounted on studs 31 and 32 which are secured by nuts 33 in the web 21 of the bracket and, as illustrated in Figure 7, a web 34 of the rollers 14 is secured between a head 35 of the stud and a collar 36 positioned on the stud. The roller is also provided with a bearing sleeve 3/ positioned in an opening 38 in the web 34 of the roller. The studs are threaded in the web Z1 and the roller is secured in adjusted positions by the lock nut 33. The positions of the rollers may be adjusted by rotating the studs to move the rollers laterally to compensate for positions of the rails of the drawers.
Each of the rails 16 and 19 is provided with a web 39 in which openings 46 for screws and the like for attach# ing the rails to the sides of a drawer are provided and upper anges 4l and lower flanges 42. The flanges 42 are provided with upwardly extended ends 43 that provide stops for limiting outward movement of the drawers and the flanges 41 terminate at points 44 providing gaps or open spaces 45 through which the rollers pass in removing the drawer from the cabinet. To remove the drawer the outer end is tilted upwardly, as illustrated in Figure 6 whereby rst one roller and then the other pass through the opening 45.
With the parts designed and assembled as illustrated and described the brackets itl and 11 are mounted on inner surfaces of a front wall of a cabinet and positioned at the sides of drawer openings therein and the drawers are inserted by tilting the outer ends upwardly with the rollers passing through the openings 45 and with the drawers in position upon the -rollers they are free to slide inwardly and outwardly as desired.
With the drawer suspended byV the rails and rollers binding between the drawers and walls of the cabinets is substantially eliminated and the drawers are free to travel inwardly and outwardly continuously.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A cabinet drawer mounting comprising a pair of brackets, each of said brackets being substantially triangular in formation and having peripheral flanges extending at right angles thereto, each of said brackets having a pair of rollers thereon on the side opposed to said flanges, said brackets also including a base portion of substantially rectangular formation and a pair of mounting lianges extending from the ends of said peripheral flanges at right angles thereto, and a pair of rails adapted to be mounted on the sides of a drawer and positioned over the. rollers of the brackets, said rails having stops on inner ends thereof and also having openings for the passage of the rollers therein.
2. In a drawer slide, the combination which comprises 4 a cabinet having a'front wall with a drawer receiving opening therein, substantially triangular-shaped brackets having peripheral anges extending at right angles thereto, a base portion of substantially rectangular formation and a pair of mounting anges extending from the ends of said peripheral anges at right angles thereto for mounting said brackets on the inner surface of the front wall of the cabinet and positioned at the ends of said openings, rollers rotatably mounted on the sides of the brackets opposed to the anges, a drawer having side walls and a front end positioned outwardly of the opening in the front wall of a cabinet, and rails, channelshaped in cross sections, mounted on sides of the drawer and positioned to receive rollers of the bracket, said rails having stops on inner ends thereof and also having openings for passage of the rollers through the flanges on upper edges thereof.
