@Howeq UNTTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I THADDEUS GALVIN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BALL-CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,196, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed May 15,1901.
1'0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS GALVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ball-Casters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in ball-casters; and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention relates more particularly to the socket in which the ball is inserted; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts constituting said socket, as shown in the accompanying drawings, reference being had to said drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of same; Fig. 3, an inside elevation of one part of the socket for the ball, and Fig. 4: the same of the other part of the socket.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
A represents the large ball, adapted to roll on the floor. The socket shown in Figs. 1 to 1, inclusive, is formed of cast metal, is divided vertically into two parts B B, and these parts are attached to each other by a screw or other suitable fastening O. The part B is provided with an integral pintle B to be inserted in the usual socket, one side of which forms a tongue, projecting from the side of the half-socket, to which the pintle is attached, and the part B is provided with a concave vertical groove to engage the pintle and hold the parts B and B in line. The re spective parts B and B extend outward and downward at each side of the ball, thus form- Serial No. 60,327. (No model.)
ing jaws embracing the same, and in the lower ends these jaws are provided with annular channels, in each of which is a series of movable balls I which balls form j onrnalbearings at opposite sides of the ball A, in which bearings said ball rotates about an axis and at the same time is free to turn in any direction between these bearings.
To sustain heavy furniture, I provide supplementary bearing-balls D, located in the respective parts B and B above the balls F and rotative in separate recesses in inset pieces E, preferably made of hardened steel and inserted in suitable recesses in the socket These inset pieces E are thus easily replaced when worn and can be readilyniade of harder material than the socket.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a ball-caster, a large ball, a socket having two jaws embracing the ball and divided vertically into two parts, means for securing said parts to each other, a circular channel in each of saidj aws, and small balls in said channels and engaging opposite sides of the large ball, substantially as described.
2. In a ball-caster, a large ball, a socket having jaws embracing the ball, and divided vertically into two parts, means for securing said parts to each other, circular channels in the jaws, small balls in said channels and engaging opposite sides of the large ball, and supplemental balls in recesses in the socket and engaging the upper side of the large ball, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THADDEUS GALVIN.
