EDMUND MAJOR, OF TERRAVILLE, SOUTH DAKOTA.
GUIDE FOR STAMP-MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 469,157, dated February 16, 1892.
Application filed April 16, 1891. Serial No. 389,163- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND MAJOR, of Terraville, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Guide forStamp-Mills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved guide for stamp-mills which is simple and durable in construction, arranged to permit of readily and quickly adjusting the bearing or guide blocks for the stem to take up all wear, and which also permits of removinga tappet from the stem without disturbing the entire guide.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan viewof the improvement with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line w x of Fig. 1.
The improved guide for stamp-mills is provided with the usual girt or rail A, secured in the usual manner to the battery-posts B of the stamp-mill. In the front of the girt or rail A are formed vertical slots 0, adapted to be engaged by keepers D, secured in place on the rail A by suitable bolts F. Two adjacent keepers D are adapted to hold the guide or hearing blocks E for one stamp, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. 1. The sides D of each keeper D are inclined, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. 2, their outer surfaces being engaged by correspondingly shaped bevels formed on the respective guide or bearing block E. Each of the keepers D is formed with flanges D the inner surfaces of which are inclined, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1, to engage a corresponding bevel on the front face of the respective guide or hearing block E. A similar bevel is formed on the rear face of each guide or bearing block and rests against a liningG, preferably made of sheet metal, and secured to the front face of the girt or rail A.
On the lower end of the inclined side D of each keeper D is formed an outwardly-extending shoulder D adapted to engage a correspondingly-shaped notch E, formed in the side of the respective bearing-block E, as is plainly illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The shoulder D prevents the respective block from sliding downward out of engagement with the keeper.
The vertical slots 0 form guideways for the inner ends of the keepers D, which may be moved in and out thereof by tightening or loosening the nuts'on the bolts F, so that when the nuts are loosened theblocks E will be released, and they may be removed upwardly, or those of each pair may be set'closer together to take up wear, after which they may be again clamped by tightening the said nuts. If desired, thin pieces of wood or other material may be placed between the keeper and the outer vertically inclined edges of the blocks to adjust them toward each other after the nuts on the bolts F have been loosened, and then the nuts may be tightened, as be fore described. When the blocks E are released for removal or adjustment, they will not drop, as the shoulders D will prevent the same. I
The lining G on the girt or rail Aprevents defacement of the said rail, and as the said lining is preferably made of sheet metal it is sufficiently strong to prevent the bearingblocks from embedding themselves in the front face of the rail.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Asa new article of manufacture, a hollow keeperD for the guide-blocks of stamp-stems, having bolt-apertures through its inner wall and provided with the downwardly and outwardly inclined connected sides D, having oppositely-projecting clamping-flanges D at their outer edges, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a keeper D for the guide-blocks of stampstems, provided with downwardly and outwardly inclined connected sides D, having oppositely projecting clamping-flanges D at their outer edges and transvere shoulders D across the saidinclined sides D, substantially as set forth. v
3. In a guide for stamp-stems, thecombination, with keepers D, adjustable toward and from the outer face of the guide-rails, and each keeper being formed with lateral oppositelyprojecting clamping-flanges D on the outer edges of its sides, of the sectional guide-blocks between the adjacent sides of two keepers, overlapped on their outer faces by the said flanges and thereby clamped to the guide-rail, substantially as set forth.
4-. In a guide for stamp-stems, the combination, with the keepers D, adjustable toward and from the outer face of the guide-rails, and each keeper being formed with downwardly and outwardly inclined sides Df, provided on their outer edges with oppositelyprojecting clamping-flanges D of the sectional guide-blocks E in the space between the inclined sides D of two keepers and overlapped on their outer faces by the said flanges, the opposite faces of the sectional guideblocks being inclined downward and inward, substantially as set forth.
5. In a guide for stamp-stems, a guideblock having a Vertical inner edge, a downwardly and inwardly inclined outer edge, and a transverse shoulder E across thelower end of its inclined face, substantially as set forth.
6. In a guide for stamp-mills, the combination,witl1 a set of sectional tapering guideblocks, of keepers for the said blocks adapted to be fastened to the guide-rails, each keeper being formed with inclined sides engaging the inclined sides of the said guide-blocks, tapering flanges formed on the said keepers and adapted to engage the front tapering faces of .the said guide-blocks, and an inclined lining secured to the guide-rail and engaged by the rear tapering faces of the said guideblocks, substantially as shown and described.
near the lower ends of the said inclined sides of the keepers to engage corresponding recesses in the guide-blocks, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a guide for stamp-mills, the combination, with a guide-rail provided with Vertically-arranged grooves or slots, of keepers fitted into the said grooves and provided with inclined sides and flanges, bolts for securing the said keepers to the said guideways, and tapering guide-blocks fitted with inclined sides on the inclined sides and flanges of the said keepers, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a guide for stamp-mills, the combination, with a guide-rail providedwith vertically-arranged grooves or slots, of keepers fitted into the saidgrooves and provided with inclined sides'and flanges, bolts for securing the said keepers to the said guideways, tapering guide-blocks fitted with inclined sides on the inclined sides and flanges of the said keepers, and an inclined lining secured on the said guide-rail and engaging the rear tapering faces of the said guide-blocks, substantially as shown and described.
