, To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. GLo'rmen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ohiopyle, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have made certain new and useful Improvements 1n Article-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to article holders, and more particularly to an article holder especially adapted for use in railway cars, my object beingto provide a simple and inexpensive device which Wlll be small and neat in appearance, and capable of receiving and holding various small articles.

The means by which I accomplish these objects are shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2-is a central vertical section taken therethrough, substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a slightly modified form of my invention. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3, and

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken through the base plate of'the holder, substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.

Referring now to these figures, my improved holder, as particularly shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, comprises a base block or plate A, the rear surface of which is slightly convex in order that it may fit closely and firmly against the surface of a suitable sup port indicated at B in Fig. 4:, this block or plate being provided with a central opening a, and with a front face slightly convex. A clamping spring O is bent and folded to 40 form superposed loop portions 0 and 0, resting against the outer face of the base block or plate A, whereby to clasp and support articles between these loops and the base block or plate, in substantially the same '45 manner as the articles may be supported between the superposed loops, the outer loops 0 being preferably formed slightly shorter in length than the inner loops C, whereby the article may be more readily and conveniently introduced. A fastening member D, generally in the form of a screw, is passed centrally through the clamping spring C, and t rough the central opening of the base block or plate A, being secured 65 within the support 13 in the manner shown in Fig. 4, the outer headed end of the fastening member D being extended through a washer plate d. In the figures mentioned it will be noted that the base block or plate A is provided with beveled edges, its outer face being substantially the size of the clamping spring.

The parts mentioned are substantially duplicated in Figs. 1 and 2, with the exception that the base block or plate A is of considerably greater Width than the clamping spring 0, the superposed loop portions 0" and c of which are like the loop portions 0 and 0 before mentioned. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, however, the holder may be provided with an additional clamping spring E, extending upon and at right an-- gles to the first spring C, and the end loops 6 and c of which, in addition to being superposed and adapted to clamp articles therebetween, are provided with widened ends, as may be seen in Fig. 2, whereby these ends-may receive and support pencils, cigars, or similar articles, extended through their loops. In this form the fastening member D is extended centrally through both clamping springs O and E, and its headed end is seated in an outer washer plate d.

Thus, it will be seen that my invention is simple, inexpensive, and capable of effectively holding many small articles such as tickets, hats, caps, and other small articles within easy reach of a traveler.

The second clamping spring E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is particularly useful where the holder is mounted in a smoking car, the widened and rounded end loops of this clamping spring being particularly adapted to receive cigars, cigarettes, matches, and other smokers articles. With or without this second spring E, however, the holder may be provided with an outer abrasive strip or member F, this strip being shown in position in both of the forms illustrated, and being held beneath the washer plates at and d, as the case may be, and serving to provide a surface upon which matches may be struck and the woodwork of the car thus saved to a "considerable extent. It is to be noted further that the washer plates (2 and d as shown in the several figures, are each provided with a portion extending a considerable distance to one side of the fastening member and that these several washer plates are movable around the said fasten-- ing members whereby the extending portions may tighten and brace those portions of the clamping spring toward WlllCh they extend.

I claim 1. The combination of a base plate, a spring clasping member disposed thereagainst, and bent and folded to form superposed loop portions extending upon opposite sides of its center, a second spring clasping member similarly bent and folded and disposed against and at right angles to the first mentioned spring, and a fastening member extended centrally through the said spring members and through the base ate.

The combination of a base plate, a spring clasping member disposed against the base plate and bent and folded to form superposed, loop portions, a second spring clasping member similarly bent and folded and disposed upon and at right angles to the first spring member, the loops of said second spring member being enlarged and rounded, and a fastening member extending centrally through the spring members and through the base plate, all for the purpose described.

3. A holder of the character described, comprising a base block or plate, a spring clasping member disposed upon the said block or plate, and bent and folded to form oppositely projecting loop portions, a fastening member extending centrally through the spring member and through the block or plate to secure the same together and to a suitable support, and a Washer plate through which the said fastening member also extends, said Washer plate being pro vided with a projecting portion and being adjustable in a circle around the fastening member, for the purpose described.

4. A holder of the character described comprising a base block or plate, a spring clasping member disposed upon the said block or plate and bent and folded to form oppositely projecting loop portions. a second spring clasping member similarly bent and folded and disposed against and at right angles to the first mentioned clasping member, a fastening member extending centrally through the spring members, and a Washer" plate through Which the said fastening member also extends, said Washer plate being provided With a projecting portion and being adjustable in a circle around the fastening member so as to extend its projecting portion longitudinally of either of the clasping members.
