H. D. JONES.
PARING KNIFE ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY'I, 1912.

Wiiwaooeo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. JONES, 0E ASHTABULA, OHIO.
FAEING-KNIFE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2, 1914.
Application filed May 7, 1912. Serial No. 695,699
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, HENRY D. JONES, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faring-Knife Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a finger rest particularly adapted for use in connection with paring knives, said rest being adapted to be applied to the knife in such a manner that the same will extend over the inner portion of the blade adjacent the handle, whereby the operators fingers will be prevented from coming in contact with 'said'blade, thus eliminating the danger of cutting or otherwise hurting the fingers.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details. and structural arrangements, preferred and practical embodiments being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the invention applied to a knife, the hand of an operator being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2
is a perspective view of a modified form of a y finger guard.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, 5 indicates the handle of .a paring knife to which is secured the blade 6 of the ordinary well known construction. The handle 5 may be provided adjacent its inner end with an annular groove for a purpose which will be presently described.
. The attachment which comprises the essential feature of this invention consists of a single piece of resilient metal which is curved the back of the blade 6 and engage the same whereby the operators fingers will be prevented from coming into contact with the back of the blade and thus prevent cutting or otherwise hurting the fingers as is commonly the case with aring knives now in use. The inner end of the portion 9 is provided with a pairiof laterally extendingoppositely disposed wings 10 which are bent inwardly as indicated 'at' 11, whereby the said wings may be spaced only a slight distance apart.
1 From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it will be obvious that the invention contemplates providing a finger rest for paring knives which is simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum and which is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is As an article ofmanufacture, an attachment comprising a channeled plate, and resilient fingers formed at one end of the plate, the said fingers projecting from the longitudinal edges of the plate at the chan-- neled side thereof and being bent to provide convergent inner portions and parallel outer portions, the said outer portions being arranged in proximity to each other and are adapted to frictionally engage opposite sides of a knife blade. 1
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 1
O. V. ANDERSON, C. L. SHAYLOR.
